PAISLEY – The Winter Fire was kept within its lines on June 28, managers reported.

“We’ve finally turned the corner on this fire,” said Russ Lane, operations chief, as the team began to implement a rehabilitation plan that included water-barring fire trails and taking other actions that will help reduce erosion when the rain comes in the fall.

Crews are being rotated through a mandated rest-period to help renew their energy and perhaps prepare them for assignments to other fires. Although there is much work remaining to be done on the Winter Fire, some of the firefighters may be needed elsewhere in the region.

The firefighters will be backed up by a full complement of aircraft as they work toward full containment of the fire. Six helicopters will be operating, and single-engine air tankers will be available if needed. A total of 1,490 personnel are assigned to the Winter Fire, including 468 from the National Guard.

Full containment is expected by mid-week.

Resources assigned to the Winter Fire include 44 hand crews; 40 fire engines; nine helicopters; 15 bulldozers; 17 water tenders; and a total of 1,490 personnel.

Cache Mountain Fire

SISTERS – The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office has ordered immediate evacuation of the entire Black Butte Ranch subdivision near Sisters. The Red Cross has set up a temporary shelter at the Skyview Middle School at 63555 NE 18th Ave. in Bend. Evacuees are asked to contact the Red Cross at 317-3992. Highway 20 is closed at milepost 75, which is the junction of Highway 20 and 22 at Santiam Pass, to milepost 95 just west of Sisters. All people are asked to stay out of the area and off Highway 20 so as not to impede the evacuation process or firefighting operations. As of July 29, access to the Black Butte Area and Forest Service Road 1110 was closed.

The Cache Mountain fire exceeded 3,300 acres. Two structures in the Black Butte Ranch area are confirmed lost.

Eyerly Fire

CAMP SHERMAN – The Eyerly Fire, which has burned 23,573 acres northwest of Bend, was declared fully contained on July 25. The Eyerly Fire destroyed 18 residences during its spread.

Firefighters continue improving existing fire lines, watching for spot fires, and extinguishing smokes 300 feet from fire lines toward the fire’s interior until the fire is declared controlled.

Lightning caused both the Eyerly Fire and the Geneva 2 Fire. The Geneva 2 Fire, located 10 miles northeast of Sisters, burned 1,130 acres.
