Cow Kids Rodeo tests youngsters’ skills

JOHN DAY – The second annual Cow Kids Rodeo kicked off a weekend of high-flying, ground-pounding action in front of a near-capacity crowd at the Grant County Fairgrounds Arena on Friday evening, Aug. 9.
Woolie Bullie riding was the opening event in the youth division, and Riley Clark came away as the winner, managing to hang on to his fuzzy mount in top-notch fashion.
Bryonie Emery placed second, and Jerry Carter was third.
Lane Williams finished in fourth place, followed by Baylee Rhinehart.
Walker Powell won the goat tails event, snatching the ribbon off his little critter’s tail in a fast time of 4.7 seconds.
Clancy Johnston, Clark and Williams tied for second place at 4.9 seconds.
Emery scored five points to win the dummy roping event, with Powell second scoring four.
Rylie Nicolas had three points to finish third, and Ward Nicolas was fourth with one point.
In the youth division, Russell Probert won the dummy roping event with 15 points.
Sierra Burton was second with 13 points, followed by K.J. Woosely with 11.
Jonathan Coley had seven points to finish fourth, and Jon Kimball and Royal Henricks tied for fifth with six points apiece.
In goat tying, Burton was the winner with a time of 16.97 seconds.
Shyanne Winters tied her animal in a time of 17.04 to finish second, and Gus King was third at 19.35.
Casey Loverin’s time of 20.42 was good enough for fourth place, and Taylor Fulwyler was fifth at 21.14.
None of the junior breakaway ropers was able to get a rope on the calves, but Dalton Lantze made up for the misses with a 76-point effort in calf riding to win the event.
King was second with a 74-point ride, and Woosely was third with 53.
King won the junior barrel racing event in a time of 18.87 seconds, with Lacey Wood second at 19.28.
Casey Loverin ran the triangle in a time of 20.28 to finish third, and Johnny Owens was fourth at 20.40.
Winters placed fifth in the barrel race, turning in a time of 20.45.
Results of the junior pole bending competition were not available.
Trever Hamsher was the winner in the senior dummy roping competition with 15 points, followed by Tiffnie Ashley with 10 and Emma Winkelman with eight.
Zachary Kimball placed fourth with seven points, and Jessica Probert was fifth with four.
Jessie Legg won the senior breakaway roping with a speedy time of 7.05 seconds, followed by Jordan Fulwyler in second at 9.12.
Amanda King was third at 13.02.
Chad Finley blew away the competition with a time of 11.16 to win the goat tying event.
Jackie Owens was second at 12.03, followed by Legg at 12.71.
Fulwyler placed fourth in a time of 16.03, and King was fifth at 16.19.
Greg Waggoner was the only senior to post a qualified ride in the calf riding, and his 55 points earned him first place.
Legg won her second event of the evening, turning in a time of 17.52 seconds in the barrel race.
Kaytlin Loverin was second at 18.10, and Bobbee Ferguson was third at 18.36.
Fulwyler placed fourth with a time of 19.52, and Cody Henricks was fifth at 20.00.
The results of the senior pole bending event were not available.
