John Day Seniors: Bread baking inspires poem
Published 5:00 pm Tuesday, August 13, 2002
The Aug. 8 meal was served by Mt. Vernon Grange members and friends in memory of Grant County pioneers. Clear Choice furnished the entree of roast pork dinner enjoyed by the 136 diners and prepared by cooks Toni Wynne and Cindy Hyder. Speaking of Grant County pioneers, wasn’t Savilla Trowbridge a great grand marshal for the Grant County Fair parade?
Guests came from Monument, Valley View Assisted Living and Golden Heritage. Herman and Pat Keerins were visitors from Tigard.
Carryl Magee was the announcer and Wilma Bauer led the flag salute. Pastor Duane Cheadle sang “God Bless America” and asked the blessing.
We wished Edna Rettie a happy birthday.
Wednesday bingo winners were Judy Nelson and Sharon Smith, who each received $30 consolation for the blackout jackpots.
Following is a poem I thought you would enjoy:
Homemade Bread
(Author unknown)
I can smell it baking now,
as my memory is led
back to the kitchen of yesterday
and Mom’s homemade bread.
I can see it on the table,
as she placed it there to cool.
Then she’d slice nice thick pieces
when we came home from school.
I still can taste the flavor
of the warm buttery bite.
I think I shall bake bread tonight!
