Public use restrictions on campfires, off road driving and smoking on the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and Malheur National Forest continue, and additional restrictions applying to the use of chain saws, generators, or other internal combustion engines are in effect.

Visitors to fire camp at Summit Prairie are advised to check in at the Fire Information Office. County Road 62 and other roads within the High Roberts and Easy fire areas remain closed, and fire restrictions remain in effect throughout the area. For more information on road closures and other use restrictions, call the Malheur National Forest supervisor’s office at 575-3000 from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Currently, firewood cutting and chain saw use is prohibited on the south half of the Umatilla National Forest. The south half of the Umatilla National Forest includes lands south of Interstate I-84 on the North Fork John Day and Heppner ranger districts. Firewood cutting is still allowed on the north half of the forest, although that is being evaluated on a daily basis. The north half of the forest includes lands north of Interstate I-84 on the Walla Walla and Pomeroy ranger districts. Woodcutters are required to call the toll-free message number (1-877-958-9663) for current firewood cutting and public-use restrictions. The message is updated by 5 p.m. daily if there are changes in restrictions.

Current fire restrictions allow the use of campfires in the Eagle Cap Wilderness.

Five major fires or fire complexes continued to burn in Oregon on Aug. 12, according to the National Interagency Coordination Center in Boise, Idaho. These fires burned on 462,823 acres, with one new fire, the 100-acre Bald Green Butte Fire, 17 miles west-northwest of Burns. Crews and dozers are constructing fireline with support from aerial resources. The Monument-Malheur Complex on the Malheur National Forest burned 43,605 acres and was 95 percent contained on Monday.
