Former John Day and Baker City resident Carrie Gatson Shropshire, 78, of Sherwood died Nov. 27.
She was born Oct. 14, 1924, at Claremore, Okla., to Millard and Ora E. (Rader) Patton. The family moved to Baker in the late 1930s and she graduated from Baker High School in 1942.
In 1942, she married John Pete Gatson at Weiser, Idaho. They lived at St. Helens and traveled while Mr. Gatson was in the United States Army then returned to Baker City. He preceded her in death in 1978.

She married Charles Benjamin Shropshire in 1983. They resided at Sumpter and John Day, and in 1993 they moved to Sherwood. He preceded her in death on July 17, 1998.
Mrs. Shropshire was an active member of the Beaverton Church of Christ.
She enjoyed cooking and fishing. Her greatest joy was her family and friends.
Mrs. Shropshire is survived three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharron and Jim Black of John Day, Paula and Dave Turner of Salem and Caron and Jerry Thomas of Hood River; step daughter Peggy Meyer of California; two step sons James H. Shropshire of Gresham and Ben M. Shropshire of Missouri; sister Dorothy Davis of Sherwood and brother Charles Hershel Patton of Grants Pass; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Dec. 4 at Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary Chapel in Beaverton. A graveside service took place Dec. 5 at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Baker City.
