GUHS girls win Vale Invitational, boys sixth

VALE – The Grant Union track team continued to roll in early-season meets, with the girls winning the 10-team Vale Invitational meet on Tuesday, April 8, and the boys finishing sixth.

The girls tallied a total of 149 points to best second place Burns by 19 points.

Ontario won the boys’ half of the meet with 148 points, and Grant Union scored 76.5.

Prairie City, competing in its first meet of the season, placed eighth in the girls’ half of the meet with 18 points, and the boys scored eight points to finish in ninth place.

Tyler Page was a double winner for the Prospector boys, shattering the school record in the 400 meters with a clocking of 50.52, and breezing to victory in the 200 in a time of 23.99.

On the girls side, Amy Jones was the victor in two events, taking the long jump with a leap of 16-8.5 and coming back with a distance of 36-8 to win the triple jump.

The Prospector girls dominated the jumping events with Kaylee Lemcke placing second in the triple jump (33-4) and seventh in the long jump (14-7.5).

Bree Myers was fourth in the triple jump at 31-5 and finished sixth in the long jump at 15-0.

Charity Holliday rounded out the jumping competition with a third-place finish in the long jump at 15-5.5.

Holliday also placed fourth in the 100 at 13.41 with teammate Anna Cronin sixth in a time of 13.79, and threw the shot a distance of 29-7 for a third-place finish.

Amanda Courchesne won the discus with a throw of 108-2, and finished second in the javelin with a toss of 107-1.

Teammates Maci Mascall placed third in the javelin at 99-4, and Kiley Humphrey scored points with a sixth-place finish in the shot put (27-7) and an eighth-place finish in the discus at 74-6.

Kristal Holliday and Shanley Day completed Grant Union’s scoring in field events, with Holiday placing second in the pole vault clearing the bar at a height of 8-0 and Day high jumping 4-0 to finish eighth.

In the running events, the Grant Union 400 relay team opened the meet by winning the event in a time of 51.85, and also won the 1,600 relay, the final event of the meet, with a time of 4:33.44.

Myers earned a second-place finish in the 800 at 2:40.82, and Natasha Holmstrom was third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 21.43.

Charity Holliday was fourth in the 100 and 200 with times of 13.41 and 28.66, and Anna Cronin took sixth in the 100 (13.79) and finished seventh in the 200 at 28.98.

Distance runner Amber Drake placed fourth in the 3,000 (15:04) and seventh in the 1,500 (6:37.36), and Day rounded out the girls scoring with a sixth-place finish in the 400 at 1:09.84.

On the boys side of the meet, the Grant Union relay teams earned third-place finishes in the 400 and 1,600 in times of 46.84 and 3:50.59.

Josh Arnall took third in the 1,500 in a time of 4:39.94, and Talyn Elliott was fourth in the 3,000 at 11:35.54.

Tim Wallace rounded out the runners for the Prospectors placing sixth in the 200 with a time of 24.88.

In field events, Marshall Schultz placed second in the javelin with a throw of 140-8, and Ben Tschida was third at 137-3.

Danny Cosgrove took fourth in the long jump (18-8) and sixth in the high jump (5-10), and Justin Cernazanu completed the scoring with a fourth-place finish in the pole vault at 11-0.

For Prairie City, Lindy Black finished second in the 400 in a time of 1:05.32, and the girls 400 relay team placed sixth with a clocking of 57.37.

Amanda Rockhill finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 99-0, and Cherise Ricco was seventh in the high jump at 4-0.

Jessie Judd led the Prairie City boys with a fifth-place finish in the 110 hurdles with a clocking of 18.60, and Donald Teal took sixth in the 400 at 57.54.

Brandon Lovell completed the Panthers’ scoring with an eighth-place finish in the 100 in a time of 12.21.
