Middle schoolers compete at MVMS track

JOHN DAY – Up and coming track stars from five area middle schools were on hand for the Mt. Vernon Middle School Invitational track meet at Grant Union High School on Friday, April 25.

Mt. Vernon Middle School scored 160 points to win the boys’ half of the meet, and Baker Middle School tallied 168 points to be crowned girls champion.

The Prairie City boys scored 16 points to finish fourth.

The Mustang girls placed second 121 points behind meet winner Baker with 168. Prairie City was fourth with 24 points and Long Creek placed fifth with five points.

Individually, Zach DeRosier was a big winner for the Mustang boys earning first-place finishes in the 100 (12.17), the 400 (59.54) and the shot put (38-6.25), and as a member of the winning 4×100 relay team.

Blake Tull won the 200 for the Mustangs in a time of 25.60, with teammate Shane Murphy second at 26.38.

Tull also placed third in the 100 at 12.96, and Eric Coats was sixth at 13.91.

Dustin Kreger won the 100 hurdle event for MVMS with a clocking of 16.33, and finished second in the high jump at 5-4.

Ben Deiker won the long jump for the Mustangs with a leap of 16-3, and took second in the triple jump at 33-9. He also finished fourth in the high jump at 4-6.

Mark Salvino was second in the 400 (1:01.22) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (18.78), and Chance Ferguson placed second in the 800 at 2:40.70, third in the triple jump (31-4.5) and fifth in the long jump (14-7.5).

Dustin Kreger was fifth in the triple jump (30-10.5), and Alex Bremner was sixth at 30-2.5.

Laramie Horn finished in a second-place tie in the 1,500 in a time of 5:18.19, with teammates Jordan Ridenour and Coats fourth and sixth with clockings of 5:18.19 and 5:35.21 respectively.

Horn also finished fourth in the 400 at 1:04.62.

The No. 1 4×100 relay team for the Mustangs placed first with a time of 48.69, and the No. 2 team was sixth at 55.74.

In the 1,600 relay, the Mustangs No. 2 team was third (4:51.91), while the No. 1 team came in tied for fourth at 4:52.3.

Brent Tussing completed the Mustang boys’ scoring with a third-place finish in the discus at 96-6.

The Prairie City boys finished in fourth place at the meet with 16 points, and were led by Zane Murray who finished fourth in 200 in a time of 28.23, and took home sixth place in the long jump at 14-1.5.

Cody Sederlin earned a pair of fourth-place finishes in the long jump (14-7.5) and the discus (92-11), and Jamison Soupir was fifth in the 100 hurdles at 19.09.

Dillon Moore rounded out the Prairie City scoring finishing sixth in the discus with a throw of 86-5.

For the girls, Angie Allen was a double winner for the Mustangs with victories in the 800 (2:56.26) and the 3,000 (14:40.57).

The Mustang No. 1 relay teams won both the 4×100 and 4×400 races, and the No. 2 team finished sixth in the 4×400.

Rebecca Holliday had a three second-place finishes in the long and triple jumps with leaps of 13-6 and 28-3.5, and in the 100 with a clocking of 13.69.

The Mustangs dominated the long jump with Bronwyn Bartlett third (13-2.5), Sabrina Hoffman fourth (13-0.25) and Jyla Hill fifth at 12-7.

Bartlett also placed second in the 200 (29.75), and Hoffman was fourth in the triple jump at 27-7.5.

Jamie Cary was second in the 1,500 at 6:22.76, with teammate Mikaela Alley sixth in a time of 6:30.44.

Danielle Berry took third in the 100 (14.35), and Jyla Hill was third in the 100 hurdles at 18.99.

Jeannie Allen came in fourth for the Mustangs in the 400 with a time of 1:18.56, and Mandy Berry along with Alaine Wagner completed the scoring for Mt. Vernon Middle School with fifth and sixth-place finishes in the shot put with throws of 26-3.5 and 25-10.5 respectively.

For the Prairie City girls, Danielle Ricco took home the title in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.18, finished fourth in the 200 at 31.29, and fifth in the 100 at 14.73.

Bradi Voigt captured third in the 1,500 (6:22.81), and came back with a fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles at 19.62.

Tiffany Hunt was the only Long Creek girl to score points with a fourth-place finish in the shot put at 27-6.
