LONG CREEK – Two Grant County Sheriff’s deputies were shot after responding to a domestic disturbance at 405 E. Main Street, Long Creek, at about 10:15 p.m. on Saturday May 2.

The suspect involved in the shooting, Eric Ronald Brazelton, age 39, was shot and killed by a third Grant County Sheriff’s deputy, who also responded to the scene, Oregon State Police reported.

One Grant County sheriff’s deputy, Jason Rehling, was life-flighted to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for transport to Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. Rehling suffered serious injuries from a shotgun blast to the face, according to OSP. Rehling’s condition was listed as stable on May 4, as he awaited surgery. Investigators said that Rehling has been a deputy with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office for four months.

Deputy Richard Gray, a one-year member of the Grant County force, was shot in the upper back and neck. He was taken to Blue Mountain Hospital in John Day where he was treated and released.

According to the latest OSP reports, the incident began when officers responded to a domestic violence call at the residence. The disturbance started when a 911 call was placed to the Grant County Dispatch Center; three Grant County deputies responded to the call and observed a small child within the residence, OSP reported. The Long Creek Ambulance was requested on behalf of the small child. As the ambulance arrived in front of the residence, Brazelton fired three rounds from a .12 gauge shotgun, striking Rehling in the face and neck and Gray in the upper back and neck, OSP reported. Brazelton also fired one round at the Long Creek Ambulance, striking the vehicle on the left side but not injuring anyone.

The third deputy, whose name was withheld pending investigation, fired several rounds, and at least one round struck Brazelton in the head; Brazelton died at the scene, OSP reported.

The mother purchased the house about a year ago; she moved in with her two children, but the father arrived later, based on a maintenance call to the residence last summer, said Robert Cramer, a city maintenance worker and volunteer firefighter in Long Creek.

The children appeared to be young, a boy probably 3 years old and an infant child probably under 18 months in age, Cramer estimated. Neither the mother nor father appeared to hold jobs locally, and Cramer said he never spoke to Brazelton but saw him on the street.

“It’s a guy you see every day, and you’d never expect him to take the situation to that level,” Cramer said.

According to reports, the children were taken into protective custody on the night of the incident.

The shooting investigation is being conducted by the Oregon State Police with the assistance of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office and the John Day Police Department.

The incident occurred in front of Long Creek School. Late into the night, officers cordoned off nearly a block as a crime scene and worked late into the following morning collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.
