Students earn awards, scholarships

Wallace, Weigum earn Elks awards
JOHN DAY – Lisa C. Weigum, daughter of Susan Pearce of John Day, has been selected as the first-place winner of the annual John Day Elks Lodge scholarship award.
Weigum will receive $2,000, payable in two increments of $1,000 each, for the school years 2003-04 and 2004-05.
She plans to attend Central Oregon Community College and OSU Cascades where she will study psychology and counseling.
During high school, Weigum was active in student government, athletics and numerous extra-curricular activities.
This year, she served as Grant Union student body president.
Timothy S. Wallace, son of Marilyn Wallace of Canyon City, was awarded $1,000 as the runner-up in the Elks Lodge scholarship.
He will receive two payments of $500 each for the next two school years.
Wallace will be attending the University of Oregon to pursue a career in photojournalism.
At Grant Union High School, he earned co-salutatorian honors and has been very active in the Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.
Wallace is presently serving with the Pendleton Unit of the Army National Guard one weekend per month.
Kienzle wins Chamber award
JOHN DAY – For 2003, the Grant County Chamber of Commerce awarded a $500 scholarship to Mary Kienzle of Grant Union High School.
Kienzle plans on attending Eastern Oregon University, majoring in music and theater. She is the daughter of Louise and Jamie Kienzle of John Day.
Farm Bureau honors PC youth
BEAR VALLEY – The Grant County Farm Bureau has awarded scholarships to three Prairie City High School graduating seniors.
Ariel Winegar, son of Fred and Wanda Winegar, received a $750 scholarship. He plans to attend Eastern Oregon University with studies in agricultural education.
“I can’t wait to attend college to learn all I need to become the advisor and leader that will help teach and inform Grant County students of the importance to nurture and protect our future natural resources,” he said.
Regina Wicks, daughter of Doug Wicks and Celeste Isaac, received a $500 scholarship. She plans to study wildlife at Treasure Valley Community College. In her scholarship application, Regina wrote, “People need to be educated about the proper techniques of resource management and see for themselves what a healthy forest looks like. This way people’s current needs can be met while providing enhanced resources for future generations to come.”
Tyler Waggoner, son of Ronnie and Carol Waggoner, also received a $500 scholarship. Tyler is registered and accepted at the University of Idaho and will be studying agricultural education. In his application, Tyler wrote, “I am proud that my family background is in logging and ranching. I look forward to combining my desire to teach, my love of the agricultural field and plan to return to Grant County to teach upon receiving my degree in agricultural education.”
Charlene Morris, Grant County Farm Bureau member, presented the scholarships at the Prairie City commencement ceremony. “We are pleased to award these scholarships to three such fine young people,” Morris said. “Helping the young people of Grant County to further their education is one of the best investments we can make. It not only benefits the recipients, but the future of agriculture in Grant County as well.”
Farm Bureau salutes Keerins
CORVALLIS – Emily Keerins of Canyon City has been awarded the $1,000 Babe Coe Memorial Scholarship in recognition of her 4-H achievements.
The scholarship is intended to encourage outstanding 4-H members to pursue further education and is presented in memory of Beverly “Babe” Coe, a longtime Wasco County 4-H leader.
In high school, Keerins participated in Future Farmers of America and Future Business Leaders of America. For nine years she has been active in 4-H, focusing on animal science, conservation and leadership. She served as the Grant County representative to the Oregon 4-H Ambassadors program and served two years as a member of Oregon’s 4-H state ambassadors group, which travels to several special 4-H events throughout the country.
Keerins, a 2003 graduate of Grant Union High School, plans to attend Eastern Oregon University where she will study elementary education. She is the daughter of Mike and Joanne Keerins of Izee.
Lion’s scholarship goes unclaimed
JOHN DAY – The John Day-Canyon City Lion’s Club reports that the club received no applicants for the annual scholarship offered.
The $1,000 scholarship was available to high school seniors with applications available from high school counselors, but no applications were received by the deadline of April 15.
A club representative mentioned that the scholarship will be available again next year, and the club hopes to receive requests.

Kiwanis awards went to eighth-grader Zach DeRosier, seventh-grader Jacob Lallatin and sixth-grader Kristina Hansen. They each received a $5 gift certificate from Uffda Bookshop. This is the highest award given each quarter and goes to an outstanding boy and girl in each grade, selected by the staff for their attitude toward staff and students, attendance, grades, being a responsible student and citizen.
