Monument’s first car show a big success

MONUMENT – Monument City Park was lined with 84 antique, classic and show vehicles on July 19 for Monument’s first Show-N-Shine. Even with temperatures reaching 100-plus, the event was deemed a huge success. Organizer was Suzi Mael of Monument, with help from Elaine Phelps of La Pine, and many locals.

Eugene Crump’s 1930 Ford pickup from Long Creek received the most votes as People’s Choice.

Dave and Neila Wallace of Vancouver, Wash., took Best of Show with their 1936 five-window Ford Coupe.

Carlyle Stuart of North Bend drove his car the longest distance to attend the show.

Poor Jerry Boyer of Monument received the Hard Luck Award – he lost a wheel on his 1957 Chevrolet.

The Grant County Kruzers were recognized for the car club with the most entries.

1940-49, modified – First: Wayne and Peg Anderson, Prairie City, 1940 Chevrolet pickup with Teardrop camper; second: Larry Pearce, LaPine, 1941 Ford pickup.

1940-49, stock – First: Garen McDonald, Livermore, Calif., 1942 Ford military jeep.

1950-60, modified – First: Mike Schaffer, Redmond, 1956 Ford Victoria; second: John Hanna, La Pine, 1962 Chevrolet two-door hardtop Impala.

1950-60, stock – First: David and Neila Wallace, Vancouver, Wash., 1957 Oldsmobile Super 88; second: Larry Braden, Ione, 1957 Fairlane.

1970-89, modified – First: Ray and JoAnn Horton, Prineville, 1971 Monte Carlo; second: Chuck Overstreet, Pendleton, 1979 Camaro Z-28.

Muscle, modified – First: Dick Dombrosky, Milton-Freewater, 1963 Chevrolet Impala.

Muscle, stock – First: Wes Locke, Hermiston, 1966 Chevelle Super Sport; second: Mark Nowlin, Redmond, 1967 GTO.

Convertible/Sport – First: Homer Lambert, Prineville, 1959 Cadillac Convertible; second: Ken Fahlgren, Prineville, 1967 Firebird convertible.

4×4 Trucks – First: Matt Sirrine, LaGrande, 1947 Dodge Powerwagon; second: JoJo Hampton, Battle Ground, Wash., 1955 Willys Wagon.

Pro Street/Race – First: Kit Mollman, Wallowa, 1958 Chevrolet (half-ton Chev Fleetside).

Unfinished – First, Dave Abarr, John Day, 1956 Chev Wagon; second, Clarence Shearer, Long Creek, 1956 Chevrolet.

Mini Truck – First: Jack and Mary Wallace, The Dalles, 1963 quarter-ton International pickup, four cylinder.

Youth, tricycle/bicycle – First: Jordan Teague, Monument, tricycle; second: Samantha Boyer, Monument, bicycle. Blue ribbons were awarded to remaining entries.

Nearly a dozen car clubs were represented including Grant County Kruzers; High Lake Car Club, LaPine; Mid-Columbia Car Club, Wasco; North County Cruisers and Riviera Car Club, Vancouver, Wash.; Central Oregon Street Rods, Redmond; Douglas County Muscle Cars, Prineville; High Desert Corvette Car Club, Prineville; Walla Walla Outcasts, Milton-Freewater; Total Motion from Battle Ground, Wash.; The Dalles Car Club; and Rusty Wheels, LaGrande. All meals were well attended, and the Saturday night dance with music by the Ione “Pocket Rockets” drew a good crowd.

“People who had not been here before were very impressed with all of our area,” said Mael. She noted that several have already signed up for next year’s event, which is also expected to include motorcycles.

For another chance to see some outstanding antique and classic cars, attend the Kruzers’ Show-N-Shine set for Saturday, Aug. 2, at Prairie City City Park. An arts and crafts show with entertainment will be held at Depot Park the same day. For more information, see Page A7.
