IMBLER – A gritty bunch of Prospector football players hampered by illness, overcame a hot afternoon to record a second straight shutout defeating Imbler 36-0 in a Wapiti League game on Friday, Oct. 3.

The victory ran Grant Union’s winning streak to three, and kept the Prospectors on top of the league with a 2-0 record.

“The kids overcame a lot to win this one,” Grant Union coach Monty Nash said. “We had a number of kids who were sick all week prior to the game, and we had a lot of kids really step up and do a good job.”

Grant Union’s dominating ground game was running at full throttle against the Panthers, with the Prospectors rolling up an impressive 343 yards in rushing offense.

Senior Cody Frazier led the way carrying the ball 17 times for 119 yards. Sterling Horn had 61 yards on 13 attempts and Toby Thomas netted 49 yards on three fourth-quarter carries. Justin Bartlett chipped in with 48 yards on seven attempts.

Bo Thunell gave the Pros a 6-0 lead with a 1-yard run in the first quarter, and a pair of Frazier touchdowns on runs of 1 and 2 yards in the second quarter up the Prospectors’ advantage to 19-0 at halftime.

“Overall, I was pleased with with the effort,” Nash said. “We controlled the ball and did a good job of frustrating them and preventing big plays.”

Thunell hit Mitch Prophet with a 19-yard scoring pass in the third quarter, and Sterling Horn added an 8-yard TD run to make the score 33-0 heading into the final 12 minutes of play.

In the fourth quarter, Thunell connected on a 30-yard field goal to put the final points of the game on the board.

Thunell was 6 for 10 in passing good for 47 yards, and rushed the ball nine times for an additional 48 yards.

“We have an important game coming up on Friday against Joseph,” Nash said. “This is one we need.”

Grant Union returns home to play the Eagles on Friday, Oct. 10. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
