Grant Union def. Joseph

25-5, 25-21, 25-9

JOHN DAY – Behind the serving of Carrie Brown, Amanda Courchesne and Maci Mascall, the Grant Union High School volleyball team had no problems defeating Joseph in a three-game Wapiti League match on Friday, Oct. 10, to remain undefeated in league play.

Front line play from Whitney Simmons and Whitney Moore dominated the action in the first game as the Pros took an easy 25-5 victory from the Eagles.

In the second game, Grant Union jumped out to a 10-1 lead behind nine straight points on serve by Courchesne and appeared to be headed for another easy victory.

However, the Eagles rallied and at one point took a 20-19 lead before the Prospectors recovered to win the game 25-21.

“Joseph woke up in the second game, but we changed some things on the floor,” Grant Union coach Sophia Morris said.

In the third game, the Prospectors took a 4-0 lead behind the serving of Bobbie Vidourek and upped the lead to 10-4 with Brown serving for five straight points.

Kim Mathews served six points later in the game for a 17-6 lead, as Joseph had major problems making serve-returns.

A kill by Moore put the match on the line, and Mascall knocked down a kill for the match-winner.

Vale def. Grant Union

On Thursday, Oct. 9, the Prospectors traveled to Vale and dropped a three game match to a strong Class 3A Viking squad.

“We didn’t move our feet in the match and nobody played very good,” Morris commented.

The Prospectors played a pair of matches against Class 3A opponents Baker and La Grande on Saturday, Oct. 11.

No scores or statistics on these matches were made available to the Blue Mountain Eagle.

Grant Union returns to Wapiti League play on Friday, Oct. 17, hosting Enterprise in a 4 p.m. match.
