Monument Seniors: Farewell to Bob, Dottie Hawthorne

On Oct. 6, our cooks found that the freezer had fought the good fight and died, therefore they made an effort to “save the groceries.” So, on Tuesday, Oct. 7 – regular meal day – we had a delicious variety for lunch. We had beef stroganoff, chicken pot pie, Mexican casserole, green salad, scalloped potatoes, apricots, pears, applesauce and snickerdoodle cookies. And if you didn’t sample a little bit of everything, you weren’t really trying.

Thirty-one were in attendance, with Thelma Williams’ sister, Donna Craig, our only out-of-town guest. They didn’t stay for Mexican train, as they were saddling up and heading for Idaho to visit relatives.

Also from out of town, but not for dinner, were Shane, Stacy and little Elle Wright, who came for part of the hunting season.

The certificate winners were Wally Walker, free meal; Gus Peterson, Radio Shack; and Jewell Cote, Touch of Country.

The flu shots are coming! The Grant County Health Department will be here at the Senior Center on Tuesday, Oct. 28 from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Home Extension group had a “Salsa” extravaganza on Oct. 8 at the Senior Center. It wasn’t salsa dancing, it was our gourmet cook, Sylvia Cockrell, giving examples of different kinds of salsa that will be coming in handy for the holiday season that will soon arrive.

The bus transported seniors to John Day for the regular monthly trip, where they had a delicious lunch, visited and stopped and shopped.

On Oct. 10, people came from up the river, down the river and down off the mountain to bid farewell to our friends, Bob and Dottie Hawthorne, who are moving to Emmett, Idaho. We’re going to miss them.
