Jordan Valley def. Burnt River

25-22, 25-15, 23-25, 26-24

UNITY – The Burnt River High School volleyball team fell from the unbeaten ranks in the TriCo League dropping a four-game decision to Jordan Valley on Thursday, Oct. 9.

The Mustangs won the first two games of the match 25-22, 25-16, before the Bulls came back to win the third game 25-23.

In the fourth game, Jordan Valley was able to win the match taking a close 26-24 victory.

The Bulls’ season record is now 5-1 in league matches.

“They scored off our mistakes first two games of the match,” Bulls’ coach Riki Abrego said. “They got out to 10 points leads and we had to play catch up. We couldn’t seem to get an attack on them.”

Burnt River def. Long Creek

25-7, 25-6, 25-19

The Bulls bounced back on Friday, Oct. 10, sweeping a three-game match from Long Creek 25-7, 25-6, 25-19.

“I was able to get a lot of players in the match against Long Creek and from the first game on, I used a lot of junior varsity players,” Abrego said. “I played a mixed team in the second game and the JVs went all the way in the third game. The scores don’t show it, but the Long Creek team had a good attitude and played hard. They have a good bunch of girls and they are a nice team to play.”

At Saturday’s Burnt River tournament, the Bulls finished with a 2-1 record collecting wins over Monument/Dayville and Ukiah, and losing to Jordan Valley.

Burnt River opened the tournament with a 25-5, 25-20 win over the Tigers before dropping a 25-17, 25-20 match to Jordan Valley.

In the final match, the Bulls defeated Ukiah 25-16, 25-20.

“We had a little bit of a mental block against Jordan Valley,” Abrego said. “Against Ukiah, our JVs once again got a lot of playing time. Ukiah has a small team but they played us hard, came out and competed.”

The Bulls travel to Spray on Friday, Oct. 17, to play the Eagles in a match which will determine the second and third-place seeds into the upcoming District No. 4 tournament set for Nov. 1 in John Day.
