PORTLAND- Eighteen of 19 licensed businesses in Grant County said “no” to selling alcohol to a minor during a compliance test conducted on Oct. 15 by two inspectors and a minor volunteer from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.
Rafters BS, Long Creek, sold to the minor. Store clerks who provide alcohol to minors are cited and may be fined up to $350. Business owners (licensees) face administrative sanctions including fines or license suspensions.
During a compliance check, young people, ages 18-20, attempt to buy alcohol from licensees or their employees to see if they are properly checking identification and obeying state law prohibiting alcohol sales to anyone under 21. The underage volunteers, who are supervised by OLCC inspectors or other law officers, carry their own legal identification and are advised not to lie about their age.
The businesses that refused to sell were:
John Day: Elk’s Lodge, John Day Golf Club, Kountry Lanes, The Dirty Shame, Snaffle Bit Dinner House, Grubsteak Mining Company, The Outpost Trading Co.;
Canyon City: Golden Dragon Restaurant;
Dale: Dale Store, Meadowbrook Store-Cafe and RV Park;
Dayville: TX Lounge, South Fork Mini-Market;
Long Creek: Long Creek Economy and Liquor Store;
Mt. Vernon: Wagon Wheel Tavern, McKern’s Texaco Food Mart; Mac’s P ‘N’ P Stop;
Prairie City, Shoshoni Winds; and Seneca: Our Place Tavern.
The OLCC offers training to store clerks, service-permit holders and others on identification-checking techniques, identifying false identification and the laws regarding minors and alcohol.
