Elgin def. MVMS 8-6

ELGIN – The Mt. Vernon Middle School football team played its best game of the season on Friday, Oct. 17, coming out on the short end of an 8-6 score against unbeaten Elgin.

“Their coaches said they are usually up by 35 or more points by half time so they let their reserves play the remainder of the game,” Mustangs’ coach Pete Piazza said. “They told us after the game we were the best team they’ve played all year.”

Mt. Vernon scored when Michael Duckett took a lateral off a bad snap on a punt attempt and ran the ball in the end zone for a Mustang touchdown. The conversion attempt was stopped and the Mustangs held a 6-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Elgin ran the ball back for a touchdown and made the conversion to take an 8-6 lead.

Those were the final points put on the board by either team.

“After that, it was up and down the field,” Piazza said. “I was pleased with the way the kids took up the challenge.”

Mt. Vernon gained 130 yards rushing and eight passing.

Duckett, Alex Comacho and Tyler Roberts all had five unassisted tackles.

Burns def. MVMS 10-0

BURNS – Against the Mustang B team, Burns came away with a 10-0 victory on Friday, Oct. 10.

“They scored one touchdown and had a safety for all their points,” Piazza said. “We played an outstanding game with a bunch of young kids. It was a good experience for them.”

The Mustangs had 80 yards rushing and 16 through the air on a 1-for-3 effort in the game.

Cash Wenick led the team with five unassisted tackles and Brennon Witty had four.

Mt. Vernon Middle School plays its final home game of the season on Friday, Oct. 24, against Baker, and close the season with an eight-man game at Crane on Friday, Oct. 30.
