Grant Union 52, Vale 47

JOHN DAY – Cutting turnovers down from 12 in the first quarter to four in the second, the Grant Union girls rallied from a 13-9 deficit to defeat Vale 52-47 in Wapiti League basketball action on Friday, Jan. 14.

The win evened the Lady Pros’ league record at 1-1 (4-12 overall).

“That second quarter was the big difference for us tonight,” Grant Union coach Javier Garcia said. “The first win is always a tough.”

Grant Union’s offensive attack came alive in the second quarter with Jessie Legg scoring seven points and Andrea Ashby-Andrew adding six more as the Prospectors took a 28-23 halftime lead.

In the third quarter the Lady Vikings came roaring back and a three-pointer by Erin Pugh at the 2:41 mark put Vale back in front 31-30.

Becky Landis answered with a basket for Grant Union to regain the lead and heading into the final quarter, the Lady Pros were clinging to a 34-32 lead.

Vale’s Kara Hiatt tied the score with a basket to open the fourth quarter, but a three-point basket by Ashby-Andrew combined with a total of nine free throws put the game away for the Lady Prospectors.

“We were a little more relaxed and got the win,” Garcia said. “Becky (Landis) and (Jessie) Legg pretty much dominated the boards. And we were able to make free throws down the stretch.”

Grant Union had three players in double figures led by Landis who scored a game-high 14 points. Legg had 12 and Ashby-Andrew scored 10.

Pugh led Vale with 10 points.
