Outdoor Report

Oregon Department of Fish

and Wildlife

April 13

Spring turkey hunting season began statewide April 15. This week’s recreation report lists several areas throughout the state where hunters are likely to find abundant birds.

Spring bear hunters are finding varying levels of challenge afield since the season began April 1 in many parts of the state. Weather has played a key role in this year’s hunt so far.

Steelhead angling has been good and improving in many areas of the state where the season remains open. Anglers also report slow but steady improvement for spring chinook fishing.

ODFW will issue its annual statewide Spring Fishing Forecast April 18, a comprehensive look at some of Oregon’s best fishing waters and advice from department field experts on what anglers can expect this year.

NORTHEAST ZONE FISHING

Steelhead season on all Northeast Oregon streams, except the Snake River, closed April 15. The Snake River from the Oregon/Washington Border upstream to Hells Canyon Dam closes April 30.

HWY 203 POND: Was stocked with 1550 legal-sized rainbow trout the week of March 28.

GRANDE RONDE RIVER: The river is fishable at Troy, with flows approaching 3,000 cfs.

UPPER GRANDE RONDE RIVER: Fish are moving to waters upstream of La Grande, but the best fishing is still near Rondowa and Minam. Steelhead season closed April 15.

IMNAHA RIVER (LOWER): Flows have receded to around 500 cfs at Imnaha. Steelhead angling success has been good. Anglers using bait are reporting the best success.

JOHN DAY RIVER: Steelhead fishing is winding down and will close above Kimberly in the Mainstem John Day River, the North Fork and Middle Fork after April 15. Fishing in those areas re-opens May 28. The river below Kimberly is open to angling all year. The river is high and off-color due to recent rains. When stream flows recede, smallmouth bass should become more active.

HAINES POND: Stocked with 1,000 legal-sized rainbow trout at the end of March.

LADD POND: Large trout are being caught. Approximately 30 hatchery steelhead were released into the pond. Treat these as trout (take only one over 20 inches).

MAGONE AND BULL PRAIRIE LAKES: Access to Magone Lake and Bull Prairie is available and angling success has been good.

MCKAY RESERVOIR: Due to drought conditions, the reservoir is 43 percent when it should be near full. Recent rains have led to only a small improvement in the water level. The south boat ramp is not usable and the north ramp is usable, but shallow. Fishing for trout, perch and warmwater gamefish has been fair. Anglers are reminded that off-road vehicle travel is prohibited on the widlife refuge.

MCNARY, HAT ROCK, WESTON AND TATONE PONDS:  These ponds have all been stocked with legal-sized trout.

NORTH POWDER PONDS: North Powder Ponds #1 and #2 were stocked with 1000 legal-sized rainbow each, the week of March 28.

PHILLIPS RESERVOIR: Perch fishing is good. Reservoir level is 32 percent.

PILCHER CREEK RESERVOIR: Trout fishing remains good. Some larger fish are being caught. The reservoir is 55 percent.

UNITY RESERVOIR: Trout fishing is good with 16-18″ trout being caught. The boat ramp is open and ice is off the lake. The reservoir is 67 percent.

WALLOWA RIVER: Flows have been receding and catch rates remain good for steelhead.  Anglers using bait are having the best success. Steelhead are being caught from the river mouth upstream to Trout Creek, but the best success has been below Deer Creek.

WALLOWA LAKE:  Fishing is fair for hold-over stocked rainbow trout. Docks have been installed at both boat ramps.

UMATILLA RIVER: Steelhead are being trapped at Three Mile Dam at a rate of 20 to 50 fish-per-day. Steelhead trapping and hauling will continue. A few anglers were contacted by creel checkers last week and no catch was reported. However, with good numbers of fish in the river and favorable flows, anglers that venture out should experience good success for steelhead upstream from Barnhart through the April 15 closure. The season for spring chinook opened April 16. Very few chinook have been counted at Columbia River dams and only a few have been counted at Three Mile Dam. Spring chinook fishing is expected to be slow on the opener. However, chinook return numbers can change quickly. Anglers are encouraged to keep track of Columbia River dam counts. Chinook will be trapped at Three Mile Dam and hauled upstream above the lower river irrigation diversions due to drought conditions.

WALLA WALLA RIVER: Fair numbers of steelhead are now returning to the Oregon portion of the river.  However, the total run to date is estimated to be only 300 steelhead.  Fishing through the April 15 closure should be fair.

COLD SPRINGS RESERVOIR: The reservoir is 59 percent full.

WILLOW CREEK RESERVOIR: The reservoir has been stocked with legal-sized trout.

WOLF CREEK RESERVOIR: Reservoir level is 48 percent full.

HUNTING

GRANT, HEPPNER AND UMATILLA DISTRICTS:

COYOTE: hunting has been fair using calls, primarily mouse squeaks and rabbit distress calls. Hunters are reminded to obtain landowner permission when hunting on private land.

SPRING BEAR: Hunters in the West and South Blue Mountain hunt areas will find good access throughout most public land areas at the higher elevations. Most mid-elevation plants on open slopes have already emerged and are good locations to spot foraging bears.  Bear activity will continue to increase through the season.

SPRING TURKEY: Excellent turkey populations are expected this year. Mild winter and current green-up in many areas has birds scattered throughout the mid-elevations. Now is a good time to scout, using calls to locate birds.

UNION DISTRICT:

SPRING TURKEY: Good numbers of gobblers are available throughout Union County. Hunters may find birds almost anywhere in the county, with the best opportunities north of Elgin. Hunters that scout for birds prior to the season without spooking or neducating” toms will have more opportunities for success. Turkey hunters should be aware their calling could attract predators such as cougars, bobcats or coyotes.

SPRING BEAR: Controlled spring bear season begins April 15 in the Starkey, Wenaha and Catherine Creek Units. Hunters will find good access to most portions of the units due to very little snowpack. Hunters should watch open slopes and meadows during mornings and evenings for feeding bears. Bears have an excellent sense of smell and hunters should travel into the wind to avoid spooking them. Sign, such as overturned logs, bark pulled from old stumps, or disturbed anthills indicates recent bear activity. Successful hunters are reminded to provide a premolar tooth in the provided envelope for age analysis.

Cougar hunting will continue to be slow due to poor tracking conditions. Using a predator call to attract cougars may improve success.

SNAKE RIVER ZONE FISHING BROWNLEE RESERVOIR: Trout, perch and crappie fishing have been generally good.  Bass fishing has been exceptional. Catfishing is slow but will pick up as weather warms. Water levels have been fluctuating, which throws the bite off periodically. The reservoir is six feet below full. Call Idaho Power Company’ s recording at 1-800-422-3143 to get information on access at recreational sites or visit  under the nRivers and Recreation” heading. For reservoir level information.

HELLS CANYON RESERVOIR: Rainbow trout fishing at the mouths of tributaries has been good. Bass fishing has been very good.

OXBOW RESERVOIR: Trout fishing has been fair. Bass fishing has been very good.

SNAKE RIVER, HELLS CANYON DAM TO THE STATE LINE: Steelhead fishing has been very good lately below the dam. Steelhead fishing closed April 15.
