Letter: It was likely a wolf

A couple of weeks ago you had an article about a wolf sighting. I wasn’t very happy when I saw what John Stephenson of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife-had to say after his “investigation.” He said, “It’s unlikely that it was a wolf.” Well, Mrs. Hopkins, I know you saw what you saw. About three years ago, I and two others saw a wolf. Yes, a wolf.

We were standing by a fire pit at a camp on the Middle Fork of John Day River looking down this drainage. We saw a doe run across a fairly good-sized opening. Right close behind her was a wolf in chase. Yes, a wolf.

At first no one said anything. We all three just looked at each other for a few seconds, shocked at what we had just seen. Then, almost simultaneously we all said “Wolf.”

We had zero proof of what we had seen, but after reading the recent article, I’m glad we didn’t report our sighting so we wouldn’t be told, “It’s unlikely that it was a wolf.” We knew what we saw and I believe it’s pretty unmistakable when you see one. They certainly do have a look of their own.

Mrs. Hopkins, I believe you.
