MONUMENT – Within the past few months, the city has lost two mayors and one City Council president. At the Feb. 14 council meeting, one of these positions was filled when Jeremy Boyer was named president of the council by council members Michelle Lawrence, Carol Hyder, Bill Turner and Frances Arneson.

The council also made the decision to take more time finding their next mayor. According to the city’s attorney, they have a few months to appoint a new mayor.

“Right now, the council is just going to take their time and find someone who wants to fill the position,” said Shannon Bravos, city manager.

Joe Duncan resigned as mayor Dec. 15. According to Duncan’s letter of resignation, his reasons for resigning were due to lack of positive feedback from members of the community.

“I have no health problems that figure into this decision. This decision is made totally due to lack of appreciation shown by many citizens of Monument for the things that we have tried to accomplish,” Duncan said in his letter.

Andy Schutz resigned as council president Feb. 1 because he felt there were conflicts within the council.

“It is in everyone’s best interests that I resign at this time,” Shutz’s letter said.

Ormand Lesley was appointed mayor Jan. 11 to fulfill the rest of Duncan’s term. Lesley was involved in a three-vehicle car accident where four people were injured on Jan. 28, which led to criminal charges against him.

“I cannot explain what happened, but I am deeply sorry that it did. I would give my life to undo it,” Lesley said in his letter of resignation.
