Waggoners have best spring yard

PRAIRIE CITY – Carol and Ron Waggoner didn’t expect the first-place award they received from the Green Thumb Garden Club. It came as a total surprise.

“We didn’t know the Green Garden Club was looking over our fence,” said Carol. “We do know they admire our clematis.”

The award, “Best Spring Yard,” was accompanied by a check for $25. The Waggoners found out about a month ago that they won, and were quite surprised; they didn’t consider their yard anything special.

In addition to the beautiful plants that adorn the yard, Ron is growing a small garden that has tomatoes, onions and jalapenos. “Everything necessary to make salsa,” he said.

Ron has been a feller buncher operator for the past 20 years and works for O’Rorke Logging. He grew up in John Day. Carol works for Old West Federal Credit Union in John Day and has lived in Grant County since she was 10, coming originally from Bates.
