Stargazing program

JOHN DAY – A free stargazing program will be offered at the 7 p.m. April 25 at the Grant County Library. Bob Duke will present a 45-minute slide show before viewing the night sky. Several telescopes will be available. Info: 575-1992.

District 3 board meetings

JOHN DAY – A board work session will be held at 5 p.m. April 25 in the District 3 office boardroom. The purpose of the session is to discuss balancing the 2007-08 budget. Board of directors will hold a budget meeting at 7 p.m. May 2 in the district office boardroom.

Young Life fund-raisers

JOHN DAY – Grant County Auto Parts will hold a one-day sale from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 27. All proceeds will benefit the Grant County Young Life program. Inventory sold at 50 to 75 percent off regular prices.

Bark dust will be sold from 8 a.m. to noon April 28 behind the Grant County Auto Parts building. $18 per pick-up load. A loader will be on site.

Young Life banquet

JOHN DAY – Grant County Young Life will hold their annual fund-raiser banquet at 6 p.m. April 28 at the John Day Senior Center. This year’s guest speaker is John Franklin, Young Life regional director for the northwest. Info: Ken Purnell at 575-2414 or Suzy Burton at 575-0762.

Museum meeting

JOHN DAY – The Friends of Kam Wah Chung and Co. Museum will hold its annual meeting at 2 p.m. April 28 in the Interpretive Center. Info: Kathy Smith at 820-4597.

Cow paddy golf

DAYVILLE – The 3rd annual Cow Paddy Golf Tourney will be held April 28 at the South Fork Golf Course in Dayville. Entry fee is $20 each with three people per team. Draw for team registration begins at 10:30 a.m. Tee-off at 11 a.m.

Payout is 50-30-20 with half pot donated back to 2007 Spray Rodeo Queen Savanna Richardson. Barbecue lunch at 2 p.m. $5 per plate. Info: 987-2488 or 934-2143.

Grad night fund-raiser

PRAIRIE CITY – Grant Union High School 2007 grad night committee will hold a sporting clays shoot at 10 a.m. April 29 at the shooting range west of the co-gen in Prairie City. $15 for 50 targets. Diabetes class

JOHN DAY – Blue Mountain Hospital will offer the diabetes class series beginning May 2. The series is free and will be held from 5:15 to 7 p.m. in the hospital cafeteria for five consecutive Wednesdays. Each week will focus on a different topic, including diabetes management, meal planning, exercise and foot care. Info: 575-4157.

TEC board meeting

BAKER CITY – Training and Employment Consortium board of directors will meet at 10 a.m. May 3 at the Sunridge Inn in Baker City. Items on the agenda include the approval of minutes and ratification of contracts. Info: Katy Nantz at 963-7942.

Boy Scout spaghetti feed

JOHN DAY – Boy Scout Troop 898 will hold its 15th annual spaghetti feed from 5 to 7 p.m. May 4 at the John Day Elks Lodge. All-you-can-eat spaghetti (meat or meatless sauce), bread, veggie, dessert and beverage. Tickets available from Boy Scouts or at the door. Prices: Adults, $5; Seniors, $4; children 12 and under, $3; or $18 family.

F.C.E. spring fling

MONUMENT – Family, Community and Education will hold a spring fling from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 4 at the Monument Senior Center. Cost is $5 per person.

New support group

MT. VERNON – Oregon CURE support group will begin serving Grant County residents from 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 8 at the Presbyterian Church in Mt. Vernon. CURE is a support group for adult family members and friends of the incarcerated and will be held the second Tuesday of each month. Info: Julie at 932-4446.

Cans for history

Ladies Bible study

Head Start for next school year

JOHN DAY – The Grant County Head Start Center is accepting applications for the fall of 2007 school year. There are no tuition fees. Enrollment will begin in early June. There are 11 openings for children 3 and 4 years old. Info: Mark Lesniak at 575-1349.

Ongoing Fossil Beds

The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument often provides ranger conducted hikes, tours of sections of the monument and even stargazing at the monument’s Thomas Condon Visitor Center, 32651 Highway 19 in Kimberly.

Long Creek center

LONG CREEK – The community center is available for $10 deposit and a refundable $10 cleaning fee for short gatherings and for $10 deposit and $25 usage fee for longer gatherings (five or more hours).

Grant County Historical Museum, Canyon Boulevard, Canyon City will be open in April. Info: 575-0509.

Prairie City Recycling
