Fees going up for campsites on Malheur Forest

As people venture into the Malheur National Forest for summer recreation they will notice a few changes in the campgrounds according to Jennifer Harris, recreation staff officer.

“We’ve been busy making improvements to our campgrounds on the Malheur National Forest,” Harris said. “Because we are able to keep most of the fees we collect we’ve been able to install new water systems at Idlewild, Magone Lake and Parish Cabin campgrounds. We’ve also been able to replace many picnic tables and fire rings and improve access to our facilities.

“Unfortunately, just like everyone else, our operating costs have been increasing and we need to increase fees slightly after almost 10 years. It’s important to us to provide clean, healthy, safe places for the public to enjoy. After all, everyone appreciates a clean toilet.”

Overnight camping fees beginning Memorial Day weekend will be as follows:

? $6 per night at Starr Campground.

? $8 per night at Big Creek, Deerhorn, Dixie, Emigrant, Falls, Joaquin Miller, Middle Fork, Parish Cabin, Strawberry, and Trout Farm.

? $10 night at Delintment Lake, Idlewild, and Yellowjacket.

? $13 night a Magone Lake campground.

Second vehicle fees at the same site will remain as the nightly camping fee. Special rates for group use of group camping sites and picnic shelters are also available when the exclusive use of these sites is reserved through the national reservation service at (www.recreation.gov).
