Howard Leland “Bad Beaver” Gilliam of John Day died at his home July 7, 2007. He was 83.

A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2007, at the Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Church, with Pastor Andy Anderson officiating.

Mr. Gilliam was born on Jan. 18, 1924, in Porterville, Calif. to Reuben and Dorothy (Neiman) Gilliam. He graduated from Porterville High School in 1942, and then joined the Navy, serving until 1945 as a Pharmacist Mate Third Class. He then moved to Redmond, then Forest Grove before finally settling in John Day in 1968. He worked in the lumber mills and logging industry for 37 years before retiring.

Mr. Gilliam loved hunting, fishing, camping, black powder muzzle loading, and was a member of the Murderer’s Creek Marauders.

He is survived by his son, Alvin Gilliam, and his wife, Julie, of Canyon City; daughter, Sue Gilliam, and fiance, Ricky Weickum, of John Day; son, Donald Gilliam, and his wife, Lillian, of Santee, Calif.; son William Gilliam; sister Patsy Haywood and husband Bob of Porterville, Calif.; sister-in-law Pat Albert of Edmonds, Wash.; brother-in-law Jerry Albert; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria, who died October 5, 1999; his parents; sister-in-law Maxine Van Dusen; brother-in-law Lyle Van Dusen; and sister Jeanne Hanggi.
