JOHN DAY – The John Day Elks will hold a car show and judging at 9 a.m. Sept. 8, followed by music, food and a patio beer garden. Chicken-fried steak will be served at the lodge at 6 p.m. Cost is $7. Folk legend performance

Shoot to retrieve
The Oregon Bird Hunters Association will hold its 9th annual Shoot to Retrieve competition Sept. 8 and 9. Only 20 dog/hunter teams accepted so register early. Cost is $60 for both days. Public meeting

Developmental screening
JOHN DAY – The Grant County Early Intervention program will hold a free developmental screening for children 3 and 4 years old from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 14 at the Blue Moutain Education Center (formerly Blue Mtn. Jr. High). Areas to be screened include hearing, vision, gross and fine motor skills, cognitive and communication skills. Info: 575-3643.
Half-Fast marathon
PRAIRIE CITY – The annual Strawberry Mountain Half-Fast Marathon, sponsored by the Strawberry Striders running group, will take place on Sept. 15. The walk/run starts in Prairie City and ends at the John Day City Park. Walk begins at 7 a.m. and run begins at 8 a.m. Entry forms available at the Grant County Chamber of Commerce. Entry fee is $10, $5 of which will go to support Grant Union’s cross-country and track teams. Info: 932-2758.
Car wash
JOHN DAY – A car wash will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 15 at the Les Schwab parking lot. Proceeds will help Prairie City students fund a trip to Washington, D.C. Info: 820-3314.
Athletic passes available
JOHN DAY – Grant Union High School athletic passes are available for the 2007-2008 school year. The pass admits parents and family members under the age of 14 to all regularly scheduled athletic events during the school year. This does not include playoff games. Cost is $100, and may be purchased at the high school during regular business hours. Deadline is Sept. 27. Info: 575-1799.
OngoingFossil Beds
The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument will offer a free, ranger-conducted auto tour at 10 a.m. Sept. 8. The two-hour tour will begin at the Sheep Rock Unit’s Thomas Condon Visitor Center, 32651 Highway 19 in Kimberly.

Long Creek center
LONG CREEK – The community center is available for $10 deposit and a refundable $10 cleaning fee for short gatherings and for $10 deposit and $25 usage fee for longer gatherings (five or more hours).

Grant County Historical Museum, Canyon Boulevard, Canyon City is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Info: 575-0362.
Grant County Ranch and Rodeo Museum, on Main Street in John Day, across from the Ford dealer at Dayton Street open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday or by appointment. Admission: $3. Under 12, free. Info: 575-5545 or 820-3624.

Prairie City Recycling
