Diabetes classes

JOHN DAY – Blue Mountain Hospital is sponsoring a five-week series of classes on diabetes that began Jan. 7. Classes are at 1-3 p.m. Mondays in the downstairs conference room at the hospital. Classes continue Jan. 14, 21, 28, and Feb. 4. The classes are free and open to the community. Topics covered include the basics of diabetes, exercise, nutrition, meal planning with the dietician and foot care. Info: 575-4157.

Stockgrowers meet

JOHN DAY – The Grant County Stockgrowers will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at Keerins Hall, Grant County Fairgrounds.

DAR Meeting

Shooting Sports Club

JOHN DAY – Grant County Shooting Sports Club will hold its annual meeting Friday, Jan.11, 6 p.m. at the Outpost. Among the meeting’s agenda items are: election of officers, prizes and awards for winners of shooting events, the future of the Seneca Range, and development of Bear Creek Range. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

Market animal sign-ups

JOHN DAY – Grant County 4-H Beef, Sheep, Swine and Goat Projects must be signed up by Friday, Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. Youth in fourth through 12th grades who are interested in raising a 4-H market animal may enroll by contacting the Grant County Extension Office, located in the basement of the Courthouse.  For more information, contact the Extension Office at 575-1911.

Snowballers Ride

Movie time

CANYON CITY – The Grantville Theatre offers movies for the community at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. every other Saturday. The next screening is Jan. 12, and doors open a half hour before the movie starts. There is a $1 utility fee to help pay for heating the building. Call City Hall, 575-0509 for movie titles and information.

Clay pigeon shoot

KIMBERLY – The third annual Shotgun Series Clay Pigeon Shoot to benefit the Spray Rodeo is coming up on Saturdays, Jan. 12, Feb. 2, March 1 and April 5. Practices are at 11 a.m., at $3.50 for 10 shots. The shotgun shoot begins at noon, and the cost is $15 for 25 shots. The winner at the end of the series takes home a Remington 870. There also will be a women’s shoot for a $100 Cabela’s gift certificate and an 18-and-under shoot for a pair of binoculars. The shoot is held at Kimberly Rock Products, at Milemarker 9 on Highway 402 between Monument and Kimberly. Info: Brad or Julie Smith, 934-2143.

Boosters meet

JOHN DAY – The Grant Union Booster Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14 in the Grant Union High School Library. Boosters will discuss the rejuvenation of funding for GU’s Athletic Department for the 2007-2008 season. For more information, call GUHS at 575-1799.

Extension, 4-H meeting

JOHN DAY – The Grant County Extension and 4-H Service District Advisory Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, via a phone conference call. Agenda items include vacant council positions, update on district and state budget, update on Grant County Agent position and the Oregon network citizen advisory meeting. Genealogical Society

JOHN DAY – Dr. Ted Merrill will be the guest speaker at the Jan. 15 no-host historical luncheon sponsored by the Grant County Genealogical Society. Dr. Merrill will speak on the changes that have taken place in the medical field in Grant County. The luncheon will be at noon at The Outpost. The public is invited.

Rising Stars toastmasters

JOHN DAY – The public is invited to the Rising Stars Toastmasters meeting at their new location in the Chamber of Commerce building at 301 W. Main. St. The club will meet monthly on the third Thursday, 6:30-7:30 a.m., starting Jan. 17. 4-H Leaders meeting

CANYON CITY – The winter meeting of the 4-H Leaders Association will meet Monday, Jan 21 in the conference room at the courthouse. The agenda and minutes of the October meeting will be mailed out the first week of January.

Prenatal Classes

JOHN DAY – A new five-week series of prenatal classes starts Jan. 28 at Blue Mountain Hospital. Classes will be Mondays, 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the downstairs classroom at the hospital. Wear comfortable clothes and snacks will be provided. Cost is $30 and scholarships are available. Valentine Dinner

The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument often provides ranger-conducted hikes, tours of sections of the monument and even stargazing at the monument’s Thomas Condon Visitor Center, 32651 Highway 19 in Kimberly.
