Elks Lodge honors exceptional students

The John Day Elks Lodge recently announced its students of the month for the first part of the 2007-08 school year.

The students were honored at the Lodge meeting on Jan. 10.

The honorees were:

Michael S. Bass

Student of the monthMichael S. Bass is the son of Mike and Anna Bass and attends Prairie City High School where he is a senior. He has maintained between a 3.8 and 4.0 GPA during high school.

Honors and awards in academics: honor roll, having perfect attendance, and a being a member of the National Honor Society.

Honors and awards in athletics and activities: Varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. In 2005, he participated in the 14/15 year old Harney/Grant All-Star Baseball Team State Playoffs. In FFA, he has earned many honors and awards, including 4th, 2nd and two 1st places in the District Soil Judging Contest, Green Hand Award, Proficiency Award in Swine Production Entrepreneurship, Parli Pro participant, Chapter Degree, Beginning District Shop Skill Welding – 2nd place, District Pig Production Proficiency winner, State Degree, District Blue Print Reading 4th place. Michael was also responsible for the care of FFA project hog along with as many as six butcher hogs, during the past 4 years. He has been a Math Bowl participant. In 2004, Michael received Grant County Fair Reserve Grand Champion – Beginning Showmanship for swine. In 2006, Grant County Fair, 2nd place Heavyweight Market Hog, and in 2007, Grant County Fair, he received Reserve Grand Champion Market Hog.

Officers and positions of leadership: Freshman representative, President of Junior Class, President of Senior Class, PC FFA Chapter Treasurer, and Student Body Vice President.

School and community service activities: Assisted with Booster Club concessions, community Christmas decorations, FFA 4th of July BBQ, FFA Car Show Breakfast.

Michael’s hobbies are FFA, sports, hunting, camping, mechanicing, off-roading and spending time with friends.

Kyle Hand

Student of the monthKyle Hand is the son of Tony and Linda Hand and a junior at Dayville High School with a 2.89 GPA.

Honors and awards in academics: honor roll and having an honorable mention.

Honors and awards in athletics and activities: Varsity lettering in football and basketball, 2nd team linebacker, running back – District honorable mention, 2007 District Basketball team and MVP in Football in 2007.

Officers and positions of leadership: Sergeant of Arms – 2006/2007 and 2007/2008; and Class Vice President 2005/2006.

School and community service activities: very active in school – Christmas Cheer Program.

His hobbies are sports, hunting and fishing.

Elizabeth Inscore

Student of the monthElizabeth Inscore is the daughter of Skip and Cindy Inscore and a senior at Dayville High School with a high school cumulative GPA of 3.98.

Honors and awards in academics: high honors, girl of the year, honor society and student of the month.

Honors and awards in athletics and activities: varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and track, team captain for all, Honorable Mention All League Basketball, MVP Volleyball, 2nd team all-league volleyball, and Trackster trophy.

Officers and positions of leadership: student body President, student council and National Honor Society Secretary.

School and community service activities: very active in church, community and school activities, school Christmas program and Christmas baskets.

Her hobbies are basketball and running.

Tyler Nathaniel Webb

Student of the monthTyler Webb is the son of Mark and Sherri Webb and a senior at Grant Union High School and carries a GPA of 4.0.

Honors and awards in academics: Grant Union High School Academic letter; three Academic Awards in English, two in Science, one in History and one in Global Studies. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has won 3rd place at the science fair.

Honors and awards in athletics and activities: three years of Varsity Letter in soccer, won 1st in Junior Men’s division at the 2006 Spring Thaw DH Mountain Bide Race. He has achieved Life Rank in Boy Scouts and is Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow in the Wa-la-moot-kin Lodge.

Officers and positions of leadership: ASB President 2007-2008, Boy Scout Troop 898 Senior Patrol Leader. Tyler helped found Frontlines Free Riding Mountain Bike Club, and is a member of the student council.

School and community service activities: Boy Scouts of America Troop 898, Lunch Buddies program at Humbolt Elementary, and he has helped with the cub scouts.

His hobbies are mountain biking, snowboarding, running and reading.

Breanna Marie Wilson

Student of the monthBreanna Wilson is the daughter of Chuck and Gretchen Wilson and a sophomore at Grant Union High School and carries a GPA of 4.0.

Honors and awards in academics: 2007 Student of the year, high honor roll and 1st place FBLA districts in word processing.

Honors and awards in athletics and activities: J.V. volleyball most valuable defensive player.

Officers and positions of leadership: Class President and FBLA Secretary.

School and community service activities: volunteered for Red Cross Blood drive, taken stats and announced for softball and basketball tournaments for her school and community service.

Her hobbies are volleyball, track, reading and sledding.

Cole B. Winegar

Student of the monthCole Winegar is the son of George and Christie Winegar and a senior at Prairie City High School and carries a GPA of 3.71.

Honors and awards in academics: member of the National Honor Society for three years, on the honor roll for 4 years and a Math Bowl participant for 2 years, Outstanding Student in Advanced Ag Science/Technology, Academic Letter, Spanish Award, History Award, Language Arts Award, ASHME 10 Mathematics Exam, Highest Score in school and Excellence in Writing Award.

Honors and awards in athletics and activities: Varsity Letter in football, Captain 1st team All League Running Back, 2nd Team All League Linebacker, MVP, alternate to 6 man All Star game, and Blue Mountain Eagle’s Athlete of the Week. Junior year: Varsity letter, OSAA State participation Award. Sophomore year: Varsity Letter, OSAA State participation Award. Freshman year: Varsity Letter, OSAA State participation Award.Basketball: Junior year: Varsity Letter. Sophomore year: Varsity Letter, Most Inspirational. Freshmen year: Participation award. Baseball: Junior year: Varsity Letter. Sophomore year: Varsity letter, and honorable mention All League Catcher. Freshman year: Varsity letter and most improved. Cheerleading: Senior year: Varsity Stunt Guy. 4-H Shotgun for 3 years, FFA for 6 years, Prom Court for 2 years, Homecoming Court for 2 years.

Activity Awards: FFA Greenhand Degree; FFA Star Greenhand; Grand Champion Beginning Swine Showmanship; Reserve Grand Champion Beginning Steer Showmanship for 2 years; Home and/or Community Development; Agricultural Proficiency Award in Entrepreneurship for 4 years; 8th and 4th place District Livestock Judging; Chapter FFA Degree Award and Reserve Grand Champion Beginning 4-H Shotgun shooter.

School and community service activities: Town Christmas Tree Setup for 4 years, Town Planter Maintenance for 4 years, May-August Yard Maintenance at Legion Hall for 2 years, Help prepare Christmas gifts for children for 2 years, FFA Tire cleanup for 2 years, Football Tire cleanup for 1 year, Smart Reading for 1 year, Read Across America for 1 year, Volunteer Babe-Ruth Help for 1 year and Elderly Wood Cutting for 1 year.

Cole’s hobbies include hunting, fishing, and four wheeling, snowmobiling and playing sports.
