Monthly climate survey shows January was chilly in John Day
According to preliminary data received by NOAA’s National Weather Service in Pendleton Oregon, temperatures at John Day averaged colder than normal during the month of January.
The average temperature was 28.9 degrees which was 2.6 degrees below normal. High temperatures averaged 38.3 degrees, which was 2.9 degrees below normal. The highest was 52 degrees on the 4th. Low temperatures averaged 19.4 degrees, which was 2.3 degrees below normal. The lowest was -7 degrees, on the 22nd.
There were 28 days with the low temperature below 32 degrees. There were 4 days when the high temperature stayed below 32 degrees.
Precipitation totaled 1.30 inches during January, which was 0.15 inches above normal. Measurable precipitation -at least .01 inch- was received on 14 days with the heaviest, 0.30 inches reported on the 28th.
Snowfall totaled 14.9 inches with at least 1 inch of snow reported on 5 days. The heaviest snowfall was 6.0 inches reported on the 28th. The greatest depth of snow on the ground was 6 inches on the 28th.
The outlook for February from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center calls for below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation. Normal highs for John Day during February are 47.5 degrees and normal lows are 25.1 degrees. The 30 year normal precipitation is 0.78 inches.
