Letter: Parents make choices, face consequences, too

To the Editor:
In response to the letter submitted by Teresa Dunn: Leaving a child in the custody of parents who are unable and unwilling to raise him or her in a safe and nurturing environment is a malicious act against the child’s well being.
As adults we make choices, both good and bad, and we have to deal with the consequences. When these consequences harm a child, the state has the legal authority to step in. As to encouraging “a permanent mindset in the individual”, the individual(s) need to admit there is a problem and be willing to get the help they need. As to it just being a “temporary fix”, this is a good thing. A child is moved to a safe and loving environment while the parents get the help they need. As long as they are willing to do this, nothing is permanent. As to the rest, we have a justice system. The involvement of DHS is just step one. These cases go before a judge and both the parents and the child have a right to legal representation. Both sides are heard, and the judge makes a decision.
Maybe the folks your letter is in reference to need to be “reformed immediately?”
