Letter: PC resident questions city’s crystal ball

To the editor:

The salesmen for Anderson-Perry Engineering are really, really good. They have apparently convinced the majority of the Prairie City Council that they are as concerned about the water supply as they are about the company’s bottom line. These guys could sell ice to an Eskimo!

Compared to the well on Faiman, the sand filter system will be two or three times more expensive, there still won’t be enough water for lawns and gardens, and the Anderson-Perry engineer admitted it is possible for toxic materials from the old garbage dump to enter into the water system. In spite of these problems, whether through arrogance or a failed attempt to show some kind of leadership, they are determined to plow forward with the sand filter system.

The city recorder stated that the monthly water charge would increase from $14 per month to around $45, which may not sound too bad, but they must have a good crystal ball, since they don’t know what the system might cost because the engineer doesn’t know how many wells will be required to augment the SSF system!

The City has approximately 400-450 water hookups; when, not if, Prairie Wood locks the doors, when the Co-Gen goes away, when the Forest Service goes ahead with their move and all of these workers are forced to move, what will the monthly water charge be for the remaining residents in order to pay for this big white elephant? We should all be joining Kevin Dahlen – he is right on track!
