JOHN DAY – Five Grant Union students attended the Klamath Falls regional science fair held on Feb. 22.

All five received certificates of achievement for outstanding science or engineering projects.

Two of the students, Shaylee Joslin and Tim Jones, also were recognized with certificates of achievement from the Air Force and Navy.

Jones and Charles McNeil both received awards from the Society of Professional Engineers for Innovative Engineering projects.

Joslin, Jones, and McNeil were selected to advance to the Northwest Science Expo in Portland in March. Joslin investigated inheritance patterns in Fragile X Syndrome, Jones’ project was titled “Microwave Power,” and McNeil investigated the relationship between truss geometry and strength.

Also attending the regional fair were Audrey Lallatin, who studied learning and behavior in insects, and Gabe McKern, who studied the effects of prescribed burns and wildfires on soil nutrients.

The students are taught by Randy Hennen and Sonna Smith.
