Weather Service: February was cooler, drier

PENDLETON – According to preliminary data received by NOAA’s National Weather Service in Pendleton, temperatures at John Day averaged slightly colder than normal during the month of February.
The average temperature was 35.9 degrees which was 0.4 degrees below normal. High temperatures averaged 45.9 degrees, which was 1.6 degrees below normal. The highest was 61 degrees on the 29th. Low temperatures averaged 25.9 degrees, which was 0.8 degrees above normal. The lowest was 19 degrees, on the 14th.
There were 27 days with the low temperature below 32 degrees.
Precipitation totaled 0.27 inches during February, which was 0.51 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation, defined as at least .01 inch, was received on seven days with the heaviest, 0.07 inches, reported on the Feb. 4.
Snowfall totaled 1.6 inches with at least 1 inch of snow reported on one day. The heaviest snowfall was 1.0 inches reported on Feb. 4. The greatest depth of snow on the ground was 5 inches on Feb. 7.
The outlook for March from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center calls for below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation. Normal highs for John Day during March are 53.9 degrees and normal lows are 29.0 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 1.28 inches.
