JOHN DAY – St. Elizabeth Catholic Church will hold Stations of the Cross devotions on Friday nights during Lent at 7 p.m.

Prenatal classes

JOHN DAY – A new series of prenatal classes is starting up at Blue Mountain Hospital. The five-week series began Monday, March 10, 6-9 p.m., in the downstairs classroom. Wear comfortable clothes and snacks will be provided. The cost is $30 and scholarships are available. Lenten Lunch Series

JOHN DAY – The Ecumenical Ministerial Association continues its Lenten Lunch Series, 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., every Wednesday through Lent. Included in each session will be a brief devotional, as well as a lunch of soup and bread. Upcoming sessions are March 12 at First Christian Church, 575-1202 and March 19 at Presbyterian Church in Mt. Vernon, 932-4800.

Internet safety meeting

JOHN DAY – Chief investigator for the Oregon Department of Justice Bill Carroll, will give a free presentation about internet safety, 6:30-8 p.m., Wednesday, March 12, at the Grant Union High School library. Also on hand will be consumer information coordinator Jan Margosiun, who will offer information and advice about consumer fraud and ID theft protection.

Carroll has been with the ODJ criminal division for 23 years and in law enforcement for 34 years total. He is commander for the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force for the state of Oregon. The event is sponsored by Grant County Safe Communities Coalition,Oregon State Police and Grant School District 3.

Young Life banquet

JOHN DAY – Grant County Young Life will hold their annual, fund-raising banquet 6 p.m., Thursday, March 13 at the John Day Senior Center. Guest speaker will be renowned singer/songwriter, Jonah Werner. Werner, a native of Colorado and known for his interactive concert style, is a huge supporter of Young Life.

Simple Solutions seminar

MT. VERNON – Simple Solutions will be holding a “Nutrition and Stress Management Seminar, 7 p.m., Thursday, March 13 and 20 in the Mt. Vernon Grange Hall. Admission is free. To preregister, call 932-2704 or 932-4197.

Theater time

DAYVILLE – Dayville School will present “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” March 13 and 14 in the Dayville Community Hall. Showtimes will be 7 p.m. on Thursday and 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Walk-a-Thon

PRAIRIE CITY – Prairie City School will be holding a Walk-a-Thon, Friday, March 14. Students will be walking laps in the school’s old gym to earn money for their PC to DC trip in June. Donations may be made for a set amount or per lap. More info: 820-3314.

DAR meeting

Fish Fry

JOHN DAY – Last call for fish! The Knights of Columbus will hold their last Fish Fry with all the trimmings, 5-7 p.m., Friday, March 14 in St. Elizabeth Church’s Parish Hall. Cost is: adults, $6; seniors, $5; family, $25; and children under 6 eat free.

Can drive

MT. VERNON – Mt. Vernon Middle School eighth grade will hold a door-to-door can drive Saturday, March 15, starting at 10 a.m., to raise money for their class trip. More info: 932-4733.

Community Garden

Bingo Fun Night

SENECA – The Seneca Junior High will host their annual Bingo Fun Night, Saturday, March 15 in the school gym. Ticket sales start at 5:30 p.m. and the games will be 6-9 p.m. There will be 20 games of straight bingo and five blackout games. There will be prizes for every game, donated by local merchants, a concession stand and free childcare for young children. Proceeds will benefit the eighth grade field trip.

Genealogy Society

JOHN DAY – The Grant County Genealogy Society will meet for their noon luncheon, Tuesday, March 18, at the Outpost Restaurant. Tim Cooley will speak on the Manwaring and Cooley families of Prairie City.

Child care classes

CANYON CITY – The next class from Child Care Resource and Referral will be 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, March 19, in the Guernsey Building, 120 Washington Street, Canyon City. Healthy Smiles

JOHN DAY – The Healthy Smiles for Grant County Dental Coalition is pleased to announce that they are now, “Healthy Smiles Dental Clinic Advisory Committee.” The next meeting will be 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 19, in the Johnnie Titus Room at the Health Department. Bingo time

MT. VERNON – Another bingo night is coming up, Wednesday, March 19, at the Mt. Vernon Grange Hall. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the games start at 7. Cost is $5.50 per card for nine games plus one blackout game, with 50 cents going into the pot. The blackout game this time will be up to $120. Coffee and popcorn will be available and all bingo lovers are welcome!

Road-Kill Chili Feed

JOHN DAY – The seventeenth Road-Kill Chili Feed is set for 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 19, at the John Day Senior Center. Beverages, coffee and table service will be furnished. Bring your own favorite chili dish, bread, rolls or side dish. Come early and visit! Stan Benes, outgoing Malheur Forest Supervisor, will speak on current and planned activities that will have an impact on the Grant County’s economy. A question-and-answer period will follow. Grant County Court is invited to attend and present an update on the situation in our county regarding forest issues that affect our safety and well being.

Donkey basketball

UNITY – “Another One Bites the Dust” is the theme this year for the Burnt River FBLA and FFA Donkey Basketball game at Burnt River School in Unity, Thursday, March 20. Bible study

Clay pigeon shoot

KIMBERLY – The third annual Shotgun Series Clay Pigeon Shoot to benefit the Spray Rodeo continues for one more Saturday, April 5. Practices are at 11 a.m., at $3.50 for 10 shots. The shotgun shoot begins at noon, and the cost is $15 for 25 shots. The winner at the end of the series takes home a Remington 870. There also will be a women’s shoot for a $100 Cabela’s gift certificate and an 18-and-under shoot for a pair of binoculars. The shoot is held at Kimberly Rock Products, at Milemarker 9 on Highway 402 between Monument and Kimberly. Info: Brad or Julie Smith, 934-2143.

PC to DC drive

PRAIRIE CITY – Residents can donate bottles and cans to help the students from Prairie City School pay for their trip to Washington, D.C. and Williamsburg, Va., next June. For more information contact the school, 820-3314.

Fossil Beds

The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument often provides ranger-conducted hikes, tours of sections of the monument and even stargazing at the monument’s Thomas Condon Visitor Center, 32651 Highway 19 in Kimberly.
