Less hair, but plenty of heart

SENECA – Andrea Comer had been thinking about getting her long hair trimmed anyway. Now, minus about 10 inches of it, she has a new hairstyle … and at the same time, has given a special gift to another child.

She and her parents had learned about Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that turns donations of cut hair into wigs for children under 18 who suffer from long-term medical hair loss. After more research – and some “thinking” time – Andrea decided that the originally planned “trim” would instead become a major “cut,” donating the chopped off locks to Locks of Love.

Lisa Schrieber did the cutting honors. Sheila Comer says her 7-year-old daughter made the decision all on her own. Andrea says she did it “so people won’t make fun of them (the children) because they’re bald.” And she loves her shorter cut.

Her mother says that it takes Locks of Love about six to eight donations of hair to make one wig. There’s also a minimum accepted donation of 10 inches of hair. More information about Locks of Love can be found on the group’s website, (http://locksoflove.org).
