JOHN DAY – The John Day Golf Club was nearly full to capacity last Friday, March 21.

The Grant Union golf team hosted the Grant Union Invitational at the club last week, drawing 72 boys and girls from eight teams. Heppner, Condon, Enterprise, Wallowa, Burns, Long Creek, Helix and Grant Union all had golfers present.

“Coaches like coming here this early in the season,” Grant Union coach Ron Lundbom said. “The course was in good shape, especially the greens.”

Enterprise took first place in the boys division with a score of 330. Burns earned second with a 351, and Heppner finished in third with a 377. The low medalist was Dakota Hull of Enterprise with a 78. Grant Union shot a 396 to earn fifth place, and Matt Goin led the Prospectors with a 92.

“I’m really pleased with how the boys have done this early in the season,” Lundbom said. “They improve each week. This week we had three guys playing in their first event.”

Heppner’s girls got first place with a score of 447. Heather Bruce, of Enterprise led the girls with 80.

The John Day lady’s club provided lunch for the teams during the invitational.

Grant Union traveled to the Willow Creek Country Club in Heppner Thursday, March 20, but the weather cut the competition short. The rain cleared later after some teams had left, so the Prospectors stayed and were able to get some holes in on a different course.
