FAIR AND RODEO

Grant County’s annual fair continues its run as Oregon’s longest running continuous county fair. The Grant County Fair, which started in 1909 and is held annually in August, is dedicated to celebrating the ranching and agricultural heritage of the county. This year’s fair, held at the Grant County Fairgrounds in the heart of John Day, is Aug. 20-23. The Fair’s NPRA Rodeo is Aug. 22 and 23 with both performances starting at 7 p.m.

The fair is the time for Grant County’s 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) youth to show off their skills in home economics, crafts, marksmanship, and animal showmanship and breeding to name only a few. Both 4H/FFA and Open Class county raised beef, swine, lambs, rabbits and poultry can be found in the Heritage Building on the fairgrounds. The Trowbridge Pavilion houses the non-profit, commercial and organizational booths, plus the open class and 4-H static exhibits. On Saturday, the county fair parade travels from the High School down Canyon Boulevard and through John Day. Besides the thrill of the carnival and delectable food concessions at the fair, there is also a talent show, Kids Parade, Kids Rodeo, Mutt Strutt, 3-on-3 basketball contest and much, much more.
