JOHN DAY – Area postal customers can help “Stamp out Hunger” by placing food donations by their mailboxes or in boxes at the local post office Saturday morning, May 10.

Letter carriers across America collect nonperishable food from postal customers each year. It is the largest one-day food drive in Oregon and in the nation.

On May 8-9, carriers will deliver plastic bags donated by Unified Grocers to mail customers to use for donations.

Nutritious, nonperishable food such as tuna fish, soups, canned fruits and pasta are needed. Donors should not include glass items, homemade foods, or previously opened containers.

Carmen Gentry, Food Bank Manager for Community Connection of Northeast Oregon, Inc. says that “hunger is a year-round problem for many of our local folks.”

For more information or to make a cash donation, call Gentry at 963-7532, extension 12.
