Airport meeting

JOHN DAY – The consulting engineeer firm WH Pacific and the construction contractor Knife River will meet with members of the Grant County Regional Airport Commission at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28. The meeting will be held at the airport terminal building and the public and media are invited.

Topics will include scheduling of the various elements of the current Runway Extension and Taxiway Construction project planned for this summer, technical aspects, runway closure schedules, cost saving and scope of the various elements of the project in order to complete the project as scheduled.

School district meeting

CANYON CITY – Grant School District #3 will hold its second budget committee meeting for the fiscal year July 1, 2008-June 30, 2009 at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at the school district office, 401 N. Canyon City Blvd., Canyon City.

A copy of the budget may be inspected or obtained at the district office, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Horse Show meeting

JOHN DAY – The first meeting of the Grant County Horse Show Committee will be 6 p.m. Thursday, May 29, in the North Room of Keerins Hall at the fairgrounds. Anyone interested in helping with the horse show is invited to attend. This year, the State Fair is sponsoring a team penning competition which will be included in the horse show. The horse show is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, August 2 and 3. More info: 575-1900.

Ranger talks

A park ranger will present a talk on a variety of John Day Fossil Beds subjects at Clyde Holliday State Park on Friday, May 30. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. and will last about 45 minutes. The state park is located on Highway 26, seven miles west of John Day.

Art exhibition

JOHN DAY – The public is invited to the 2008 Grant Union High School Art Exhibition, 12-5 p.m. May 30-June 4 at Moon Creek Fine Art (formerly Canyon Creek Candle Co.), 145 N.E. Dayton St., John Day. Swim lessons

JOHN DAY – Sign-ups for swim lessons will be 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 30, at Gleason Pool. The first two-week session starts June 16. Cost is $30 per participant, per session. For more information, call John Day/Canyon City Parks and Recreation at 575-0110.

Retirement celebration

CANYON CITY – The public is invited to an open house honoring Elaine Husted, 1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at the Canyon City Community Center, 131 S. Washington Street. Husted is retiring, after 33 years in Grant County, as an extension agent and staff chair with Oregon State University. Presentation and memory sharing will be at 2 p.m.

Community garden

JOHN DAY – The third community planting time at the Garden of Eat’n is rescheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, May 31. The garden is located at Families First, 401 S. Canyon Blvd. in John Day. Spaces are available, and tools and seeds will be supplied. More info: call Randi at 575-1006.

Car wash

JOHN DAY – Grant County Young Life will hold a Car-Wash-a-Thon, 10 a.m. Saturday, May 31 at Les Schwab. Proceeds benefit the youth camp trip to Wildhorse Canyon near Antelope in June. The cost is free, but donations are appreciated. More info: Ken Purnell, 575-2414.

Youth camp cleanup

LOGAN VALLEY – Lake Creek Youth Camp’s annual spring cleanup day will be Sunday, June 1 at the lodge in Logan Valley. Everyone is invited to bring their gloves and rakes to help prepare the camp for Grant County youth. Lunch will be provided at noon. More info: 575-3640, 575-2153.

Blue Basin hike

Join a ranger for a two-hour, one-mile walk into the colorful Blue Basin at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31. The hike begins at the Blue Basin trailhead in the Sheep Rock Unit and will feature the geology and fossils of the basin. More info: 987-2333.

Farewell brunch

JOHN DAY – The Knights of Columbus and the Ladies of St. Elizabeth will host a farewell potluck brunch for Father Richard Edelin, in the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church parish hall, 10 a.m. Sunday, June 1. Move-up Day

SENECA – Move-up Day at Seneca School will be held 7:30 a.m.-2:20 p.m. Wednesday,, June 4. This is a tradition in which students “move up” to their next grade for one day to get a preview for the next school year.

It’s also an opportunity for new students to become familiar with Seneca School. Students should bring a snack and a lunch, and parents are encouraged to come along too. More info: 542-2542.

Mission trip presentation

MT. VERNON – Joyce and Loren Birmingham will give a PowerPoint presentation on their second mission trip to Togo, West Africa, on Saturday, June 7, at the Mt. Vernon Grange.

Blood drive

Regional eventsMusical “Godspell”

ONTARIO – Treasure Valley Community College Theatre Arts department presents “Godspell,” a musical based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, at the Meyer-LcLean Theatre, campus entrance, 676 SW 5th Avenue in Ontario. OngoingPC to DC drive

JOHN DAY – Eighth-graders are collecting cans and bottles to pay for their trip to Washington, D.C. in June. Donations can be made at the Jackson Shell station on the west end of John Day.

Fossil Beds

The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument often provides ranger-conducted hikes, tours of sections of the monument and even stargazing at the monument’s Thomas Condon Visitor Center, 32651 Highway 19 in Kimberly.
