Rally leads to new business venture for duo

JOHN DAY – When Sue Philo decided – after about eight years – to join her husband at last summer’s Chief Joseph BMW Rally, she never imagined that it would eventually lead to a move to John Day, much less taking over a business here.

But that’s exactly what has happened for Philo and her mother, Sig Scully, who are the new owners of GG’s, formerly Scrap N Brew.

After the trip over for the BMW rally, Philo and Scully returned to celebrate the Fourth of July – and Scully’s 80th birthday. It was then that they found out that Scrap N Brew was for sale, and by August they had a new venture.

The move is only a partial one for now, with the pair splitting time and residences between here and the Redmond-Bend area, where Philo still works in a dental office and her husband Bill repairs and installs dental equipment.

GG’s (the name is derived from what Sig is called by her great-granddaughter) offers similar services as before: new and vintage items, collectibles and quality crafts, as well as espresso and cold drinks.

As Scully says, they’re in the business of “making things new again” for people. Most of the items in the shop have been brought in by Scully and Philo.

They have also rearranged the interior somewhat, especially the office and coffee areas. They said they want to offer an inviting atmosphere with great coffee and cozy places to read and enjoy small talk. There are benches outside for relaxing too, as well as plans to offer call-in orders and curbside service for coffee and cold drinks.

GG’s also offers eBay services, both for selling and buying. For a $2 listing fee, Scully and Philo will put together a complete package for the item, including a picture and description. On sale of the item, the pair will also retain 20 percent of the selling price.

They will also do searches via the internet and E-Bay for particular items. Philo says they get many requests for books.

Future plans are to introduce dollhouse and Christmas items in the shop; Philo is a dollhouse-decorating enthusiast. Both went on a Rhine River cruise last fall that was specifically geared to take miniaturists to Christmas markets in Europe. They agreed that to now have a shop to provide these types of hobby and craft items fulfills a long-time dream.

Scully is originally from Germany and both women and their families have lived in a variety of places throughout the United States including New York, New Jersey and New Mexico. Both are very enthusiastic about living here in John Day, “a wonderful place to retire,” as they put it, and are eager to be over here fulltime.

A grand opening celebration for GG’s is planned for 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, June 14. There will be 10 percent discounts on most items, door prizes and a “Chinese auction” running throughout the day.

GG’s is located at 120 NW 1st Ave. in John Day. The hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays through Mondays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, or as Philo says, “whenever the welcome flag is flying outside.”
