STANFIELD – The Grant Union baseball program threw out the first pitch of its summer league last weekend.

Grant Union, known as the Jackson Oilers during the summer league, headed to Stanfield for a double header Sunday. The Oilers split the games with Stanfield taking the first 17-2 and losing the second 6-5 in extra innings.

The Oilers came out hitting in the first game. They closed the game out with 11 runs in the sixth inning. James Webb started the first game on the mound, and Dustin Lippert closed the game.

“James Webb made his varsity level debut and threw strikes,” Grant Union coach Ryan Carpenter said. “He was very consistent with his pitches, and I was very impressed with his performance. It’s important to get him some innings this summer.

“Dustin Lippert doesn’t pitch often during the season, but has been my closer in summer ball the last few years. He came in and shut Stanfield down.”

Cody Williams pitched the second game and was working on a new throwing motion and pitches during the game. He was relieved by Kyle Weymouth. Weymouth saw limited action on the varsity team during last season.

Despite a strong effort from the Oilers, Stanfield took the game to the eighth inning where they won on a passed ball.

Several players got playing time during the summer league. Dillon Porter played first base during the games and Taylor Temple played catcher.

The Grant Union summer baseball program is currently carrying around 12 players and will play several games this year. They will travel to Sisters for a double header Thursday. The games start at 3:45 p.m.

Some of the players will also attend individual baseball camps this summer. Cody Williams will head to a Stanford camp, Webb is attending an Oregon State camp and Temple is attending a catcher’s camp at the College of Idaho in Caldwell.
