Senior Center bingo

JOHN DAY – Bingo nights continue every Tuesday at the John Day Senior Center. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the games starting at 6:45.

Grange bingo

MT. VERNON – Bingo at the Mt. Vernon Grange is alive and well! Bingo nights are the first and third Thursday of every month. Blackout is now up to $180 with a 70 percent payout per game. Cost is $5.50 for twelve games. Come join the fun with Rob Grebb as the caller.

After Hours meeting

JOHN DAY – The next “Thursday Business After Hours” meeting will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, June 12, and will showcase US Bank, who will also host the meeting. US Bank is located at 129 N. Democrat meeting

JOHN DAY – The Grant County Democratic Central Committee official formation meeting will be held 6 p.m. Friday, June 13 at the Oupost Restaurant. All interested Democrats are invited.

DAR meeting

LA GRANDE – The Lone Pine Tree Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host the official flag retirements at La Grande Fire Station at 10 a.m. Friday, June 13. Swim team potluck

JOHN DAY – The John Day Swim Team will hold a “meet and greet” potluck, Friday, June 13 at Gleason Pool. Parents or anyone interested in signing up for the 2008 season are encouraged to come. New head coach Brandon Lemcke will be available for information, Patti Powell will handle the registrations which start at 5 p.m. and Terri Arnall will be on hand for pool pass purchases. Please bring your favorite dish to share along with your own table service and drinks for the potluck at 6 p.m. The pool will be open 5-6 p.m. for swim team members only. 2nd Saturday Gathering

JOHN DAY – Ladies of Grant County are invited to the “2nd Saturday Gathering” at the Outpost Restaurant River Room, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14. Chris McKinley will present a talk, “What is Kindness?” and Kathy Rogers will provide praise and worship music. DAT training

JOHN DAY – Disaster Action Team (DAT) training will be Saturday, June 14 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in John Day. The all-day training starts at 9 a.m. The training is dependent upon a sufficient number of volunteers signed up to justify the training leaders traveling from out of town. Retirement party

JOHN DAY – Everyone is invited to Mike Cosgrove’s retirement party, 3-5 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at 134 Charolais Heights in John Day. Dessert and coffee will be served; no gifts please. Cosgrove is retiring as counselor at Grant Union High School this year.

Airport meeting

JOHN DAY – Due to scheduling conflicts, the June meeting of the Grant County Regional Airport Commission has been changed to 5 p.m. Monday, June 16. The media and public are welcome.

Farewell dinner

JOHN DAY – The community is invited to a farewell spaghetti feed dinner for Pastor Rod Bieber and his family will be held Monday, June 16, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 110 Valley View Drive. Junior golf signups

Geneaology Society

JOHN DAY – The Grant County Geneaology Society will host Tiina Allyce at the noon luncheon, Tuesday, June 17, at the Outpost. Ms. Allyce will share her mother’s autobiography about living in Estonia prior to and during World War II.

Puppet workshop

JOHN DAY – Puppet workshops will be held 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Tuesdays, June 17-July 22, at the United Methodist Church in John Day. The workshops are free. More info: 575-0633.

Child care class

CANYON CITY – Two events are coming up at Child Care Resource and Referral. The topic for the class on Wednesday, June 18 will be “Dads Meet Mother Goose: Early Literacy Connects Caring Men with Children’s Lives.” A child’s book will be included and a minimum of four confirmed are needed for the class to be held. Department of Human Services orientation will take place Monday, June 23. Both classes are free and will be held 6-8 p.m. in the Guernsey Building, 120 Washington Street in Canyon City. Master saddle show

JOHN DAY – The Grant County Ranch and Rodeo Museum will host a “Master Saddle and Silver Display,” Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 19-21. The display will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Grant County master saddle makers who will have their work represented include: Clair Mullin, Troy Richardson, Tom Berry and Pat Lee, and past masters Harley Farra and Carl Elmer. Also on display will be bits, spurs and jewelry from local silversmiths, Lonnie and Lis Davis, Ernie Marsh, Marylinn Raymond and Zan Traughber.

The public is invited to enjoy the quality of work by these local master artists. Some items will be for sale. The museum is located at 241 E. Main Street in John Day. More info: 575-5545.

Health Fair

JOHN DAY – The Grant County Health Fair is coming up, 6 a.m.-12 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the Grant Union High School gym. Preregistrations are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. daily, at the Grant County Health Department or the John Day Senior Center. Payment is required at that time and there are no refunds.

St. Charles fund-raiser

JOHN DAY – A Mexican dinner fund-raiser for St. Charles Mission in Seneca will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m., Friday, June 20, at the John Day Senior Center. Admission is by donation only and an auction and raffle will follow the dinner. The event is sponsored by the “Friends of St. Charles Mission of Seneca” and the proceeds will help maintain, repairing and restore the historic church. Items for the auction are being accepted. Concert in the park

MONUMENT – Everyone is invited to a concert at the Monument city park, 4 p.m. Saturday, June 21. Music will be by the Northwest Inland Orchestra.

Cant Ranch walk

Join a ranger for a one-hour program at the historic James Cant Ranch, 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21. The program will feature the ranch buildings of the historic district and the human history of the national monument and John Day Valley. The ranch is located in the Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds, on Highway 19, two miles north of Highway 26. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the sun and field. Benefit barbecue

PRAIRIE CITY – A trap shoot, barbecue and auction to help with Willie Rockhill’s medical expenses will be held Saturday, June 21. Rockhill is being treated for non-Hodgkins large cell lymphoma.

Day-long shooting events will start at 10 a.m., just west of the Co-Gen plant. The barbecue beef dinner will be at 5 p.m. in the Prairie City School cafeteria. Willie’s father, Howard, will also cook the meat for the event. The rest of the meal will be prepared by the American Legion Auxiliary and the Strawberry Mountain Grange.

Class reunion

MT. VERNON – It’s class reunion time for Mt. Vernon High School graduates, 1955-1959, Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and 22. Activities start on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Community Hall in Mt. Vernon. More info: 575-1269.

Public forum

CANYON CITY – The public is invited to a forum regarding predators in our community, Sunday, June 22, in the Canyon City Community Hall. Speakers and slide presentations will cover what to look for and how to talk with your children. There will be free pizza at 6 p.m. followed by the program at 6:30 p.m.

Super-Action Games

JOHN DAY – Enjoy a family day of fun while helping raise money for new playground equipment in Grant County! Bring the whole family to the Super-Action Games and Family Fun Day, Saturday, June 28, at the Seventh Street Complex in John Day. Sign-up by June 20 for the games, in teams of eight (all ages); individual sign-ups are welcome, too. There will be $1,800 in cash prizes!
