McMinnville – Keldon Martin didn’t need a hit to get on base June 7.
Grant Union High School’s Martin was selected for the Oregon high school baseball all-star team this season. He made it to first base twice during his first game as an all-star. He got hit by a pitch during his first at bat and walked during his second. Martin also stole a base in the first game.
However, he put the ball into play twice in the second game grounding out and hitting a single.
Martin shared catching duties with Elgin’s Jake Kennedy in the series with both players getting time in both games. He caught for Vale pitcher Darron Johnson in the second game. Martin and Johnson faced each other in a double header May 10. Vale won those games 9-7 and 4-1.
“It was fun to play with Johnson because I got to catch one of the best pitchers in the state,” Martin said.
Martin joined other players from the 1A, 2A and 3A classifications for a three game series earlier this month. The games were held June 7 and 8, but Martin had to return for the Grant Union graduation ceremony on Sunday.
Martin was the starting catcher for the Prospectors during his senior year and played every inning of the season. He currently plans on attending and playing baseball for Linn-Benton Community College in Albany.
“It’s great for Keldon Martin to play in the all-star games,” Grant Union coach Ryan Carpenter said. “He’s without a doubt one of the best catchers in the league and state. Keldon’s not just a gifted athlete, he’s also a hard worker.”
