Grange bingo
MT. VERNON – Bingo nights at the Mt. Vernon Grange are alive and well, the first and third Thursday of each month. Blackout is up to $180 with a 70 percent payout per game. Cost is $5.50 for twelve games. Rob Grebb is the caller Join the fun!
Puppet workshop
JOHN DAY – Puppet workshops will continue 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Tuesdays through July 22, at the United Methodist Church in John Day. The workshops are free. More info: 575-0633.
Open gym

Child care class
CANYON CITY – Two classes are coming up at Child Care Resource and Referral. Wednesday, June 18, the topic will be “Dads Meet Mother Goose: Early Literacy Connects Caring Men with Children’s Lives” and Monday, June 30, will be “Schoolagers in Child Care: In the Mix.” A minimum of four confirmed are needed. Department of Human Services orientation will be held Monday, June 23. Classes are free and will be held 6-8 p.m. in the Guernsey Building, 120 Washington Street in Canyon City. Health Fair
JOHN DAY – The Grant County Health Fair is coming up, 6 a.m.-12 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the Grant Union High School gym. Preregistrations are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. daily, at the Grant County Health Department or the John Day Senior Center. Payment is required at that time and there are no refunds.

St. Charles fund-raiser
JOHN DAY – A Mexican dinner fund-raiser for St. Charles Mission in Seneca will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m., Friday, June 20, at the John Day Senior Center. Admission is by donation only and an auction and raffle will follow the dinner. The event is sponsored by the “Friends of St. Charles Mission of Seneca” and the proceeds will help maintain, repair and restore the historic church. Items for the auction are being accepted. Master saddle show
JOHN DAY – The Grant County Ranch and Rodeo Museum will host a “Master Saddle and Silver Display,” Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 19-21. The display will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
Grant County master saddle makers who will have their work represented include: Clair Mullin, Troy Richardson, Tom Berry, Pat Lee, and Leonard Oster, and past masters Harley Farra and Carl Elmer. Also on display will be bits, spurs and jewelry from local silversmiths, Lonnie and Lis Davis, Ernie Marsh, Marylinn Raymond and Zan Traughber.
The public is invited to enjoy the quality of work by these local master artists. Some items will be for sale. The museum is located at 241 E. Main Street in John Day. More info: 575-5545.
Auxiliary meeting
JOHN DAY – The Ellis Tracy Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary will have a luncheon meeting, 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Outpost. On the meeting’s agenda will be the election of officers.
Concert in the park

Youth group fund-raiser

Cant Ranch walk
Join a ranger for a one-hour program at the historic James Cant Ranch, 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21. The program will feature the ranch buildings of the historic district and the human history of the national monument and John Day Valley. The ranch is located in the Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds, on Highway 19, two miles north of Highway 26. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the sun and field. Benefit barbecue
PRAIRIE CITY – A trap shoot, barbecue and auction to benefit Willie Rockhill will be held Saturday, June 21. Rockhill is being treated for non-Hodgkins large cell lymphoma.
Shooting events start at 10 a.m., west of the Co-Gen plant. A barbecue beef dinner will be in the Prairie City School cafeteria at 5 p.m., featuring a secret sauce by Willie’s father, Howard, who will cook the meat for the event. American Legion Auxiliary and Strawberry Mountain Grange will prepare the rest of the meal.
A live/silent auction will be at 7 p.m. The donated items include a hand-tooled silver necklace and a four-year-old registered paint/quarter horse filly. Vacation Bible School

Super-Action Games and Family Fun Day
JOHN DAY – Enjoy a day of fun while helping raise money for new playground equipment in Grant County! Bring the family to the Super-Action Games and Family Fun Day, Saturday, June 28, at the Seventh Street Complex in John Day. Sign-up by June 20 for the games, in teams of eight (all ages); individual sign-ups are welcome, too. There will be $1,800 in cash prizes!

The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument often provides ranger-conducted hikes, tours of sections of the monument and stargazing at the monument’s Thomas Condon Visitor Center, 32651 Highway 19 in Kimberly.
