- <I>The Eagle/Scotta Callister</I><BR>Fallen Bolman, 5, was helping out at the Grant County Ranch and Rodeo Museum last week, and got a chance to test one of the saddles on display in a special show. The display of works by master saddle makers from Grant County was such a success that the museum is extending it this weekend. The museum is located on Main Street in John Day.
Saddle show continues
JOHN DAY – Due to a successful response, the Grant County Ranch and Rodeo Museum will continue its “Master Saddle and Silver Display.”
Grant County master saddle makers who will have their work represented include: Clair Mullin, Troy Richardson, Tom Berry, Pat Lee, and Leonard Oster, and past masters Harley Farra and Carl Elmer. Also on display will be bits, spurs and jewelry from local silversmiths Lonnie and Lis Davis, Ernie Marsh, Marylinn Raymond and Zan Traughber.
The public is invited to enjoy the quality of work by these local master artists. Some items will be for sale. The museum is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and is located at 241 E. Main Street in John Day. More info: 575-5545.

Child care class
CANYON CITY – Child Care Resource and Referral will hold a class Monday, June 30, on the topic “Schoolagers in Child Care: In the Mix.” A minimum of four participants are needed. Vacation Bible School

Gospel concert

PUC meeting
JOHN DAY – The state Public Utilities Commission will hold an open house Thursday, June 26, to inform the public about options for introducing a new area code in the 541 code area, which includes Eastern and Southwestern Oregon. Forest fuel tours
MT. VERNON – A series of tree farm tours, hosted by the Grant County OSU Extension Service and the Grant County Private Woodlands Association will begin on Thursday, June 26, at Grouse Mountain Ranch, 6 1/2 miles north of Mt. Vernon.
The focus of the tours will be landowner-to-landowner discussions of forestry objectives, challenges and alternative solutions. The first tour will examine how forest fuels can be managed to reduce the risks from wildfire.
The tour will also look at the Grouse Mountain saw milling operation for making high quality juniper lumber.
Participants should meet at the Oregon Department of Forestry in John Day at 4 p.m. There will be door prizes and a potluck picnic, so when you call to register for the tour, indicate what you would like to bring.

Super-Action Games

Blue Basin hike
John Day Fossil Beds are offering two ranger-led hikes coming up on Saturdays, June 28 and July 5. The hikes, begin at 10 a.m. and feature the geology and fossils of the Blue Basin fossil beds.
Starting point will be the Blue Basin trailhead, three miles north of the Thomas Condon Visitor Center, which is nine miles west of Dayville. Bring good hiking shoes, a water bottle and dress for the weather. More info: 987-2333.
Mobile dental van
LONG CREEK – The mobile dental van is coming to Long Creek, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, June 30, July 1 and July 2.
The van will be at the Friendship Hall behind the Seventh-day Adventist Church on East Main Street. Residents outside the Long Creek-Monument-Kimberly area will be accepted if time and space permits. Call Pearl Spencer, 934-2189 for an appointment.
Hunter education class
JOHN DAY – A summer class for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Hunter Education Program is starting on Monday, July 7, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in John Day. Sign-in will be at 6 p.m. that day; regular class times and days will be 6:30-9 p.m., July 7, 8, 10, 14, 15 and 17, followed by a final class Saturday morning, July 19.
A parent or guardian is required to enroll minors. Hunters under the age of 18 are required to have a Hunter Education Card in order to hunt on land other than their own. The State of Oregon mandated fee of $10 per student will be paid by the Grant County Chapter of Oregon Hunters Association for students under the age of 18.

Bingo dates changed
MT. VERNON – Due to the Fourth of July holiday, the bingo schedule at the Mt. Vernon Grange will change for July only. Instead of the first and third Thursdays, bingo will be held on the second and fourth Thursdays, July 10 and 24.

Stockhorse competition
ROARING SPRINGS RANCH – A traditional stock horse competition will be held Saturday, June 28 at Roaring Springs Ranch on Highway 205 in Harney County, between Frenchglen and Fields.

Fossil Beds
The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument often provides ranger-conducted hikes, tours of sections of the monument and even stargazing at the monument’s Thomas Condon Visitor Center, 32651 Highway 19 in Kimberly.
