Obituaries: Steven Virgil Olp

Steven Virgil Olp, 55, of Ontario, died in John Day on July 9. A graveside service was held Monday, July 14, at Prairie City Cemetery.

He was born on June 29, 1953, in Prairie City to Charles “Virgil” and Colleen (Connaughy) Olp. He graduated from Vale Union High School in 1974, and in 1977, he married Bonnie Whiting in Weiser, Idaho. She died on June 25, 1989.

Due to his disabilities, he was never involved in sports as a child. However, he began competing in the Special Olympics in the mid-80s. He was quite proud of his accomplishments as a swimmer and finally got his time to be a “jock.” He was an avid reader and had an amazing memory.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie; brothers, Jonathan and Michael Olp; and his parents.

Survivors include his sisters, Jane (John) Cole of John Day and Molly (Dan) McGee of Adrian; brothers, Kelly (Sue) Olp of Billings, Mont. and Patrick (Andrea) Olp of Vale.
