Western auction and barbecue

JOHN DAY – Blue Mountain Hospice will hold an “Old-Fashioned Western Auction and Barbecue,” at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, July 17, at the Elks Lodge in John Day. The evening will feature cowboy-poet, Kathy Moss and fiddler, Stacey DeFord. There will also be a hog raffle and live guitar music. Dan Goldblatt will barbecue tri-tip steaks and chicken breasts for the dinner, which will include beans, coleslaw and corn on the cob. Debbie Stegman is whipping up a dessert. Cost is $20 per person or $35 per couple.

Class reunions

JOHN DAY – Grant Union High School has two reunions coming up. The class of 1983 is having a 25-year reunion this weekend, Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19. More info: (971) 227-0097 or 575-0577.

Painting class

JOHN DAY – Grant County Art Association will hold a portrait painting class, taught by Pat Ross, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19. The class will be held at the home of Connie Beils, 59877 Screech Alley in John Day. The class is free to association members and $20 each day for nonmembers. More info: Sue Findley, 542-2431.

Community Hall

MT. VERNON – There will be a ribbon-cuting and open house at the Mt. Vernon Community Hall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 19. The community is invited to celebrate the remodeling of the hall at 640 Ingle St. Refreshments will be served.

Blue Basin Hike

The John Day Fossil Beds will offer a ranger-conducted hike into the Blue Basin fossil beds at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19. The two-hour hike will feature the geologic landscape and fossil history of the basin and will start at the Blue Basin trailhead, three miles north of the Sheep Rock Unit visitor center near Dayville. Bring good hiking shoes, a sun hat, jacket, water bottle and camera. More info: (541) 987-2333.

Pet clinics

JOHN DAY – Low-cost spay and neuter clinics will be held at John Day River Veterinary Clinic. The clinic will take appointments for dogs on Thursday, July 24, and cats on Friday, July 25. More info: 932-4428.

Fair court fund-raiser

Air Search barbecue

JOHN DAY – Grant County Air Search will hold their annual summer barbecue at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, at the airport. Please note the date change. Burgers and beverages will be provided; please bring a side dish and table service. Flying activities will follow the dinner; everyone is welcome to participate.

Volleyball camp

JOHN DAY – Grant Union High School is taking sign-ups now for two summer camps coming up Monday-Wednesday, August 4, 5 and 6. The first camp is for high-schoolers and will be with Lewis and Clark College head coach, Jennifer Greeny. The cost is $120.

Prenatal classes

JOHN DAY – A five-week series of prenatal classes continues on Mondays through August 11. Classes are held from 6-9 p.m. in the downstairs classroom at Blue Mountain Hospital. Wear comfortable clothes; snacks will be provided. The cost is $30 and scholarships are available. Boyer family reunion

BAKER CITY – The Thomas and Marrietta Boyer family reunion will be held Saturday, July 26, at the home of Gary Holman, 14801 Goodrich Creek Lane in Baker City.
