The Internal Revenue Service has been mailing economic stimulus checks to taxpayers this summer. As of July 11, the IRS had issued more than 112 million payments totalling $91.8 billion.

Earlier this month, the agency also sent out notices to 80,000 Oregon households that may be able to qualify for the payments – if they file a tax statement.

The IRS estimates that some 225 individuals in Grant County have not yet filed the paperwork needed to get their stimulus checks.

The prospective recipients include veterans, retirees and others who don’t normally need to file a tax return. However, to receive a stimulus check, they need to file a simple form for 2007 with the IRS.

“All it takes is a few simple steps, and the payment can be on its way. It’s not too late to file, but the sooner people file, the faster they’ll receive their money,” said Doug Shulman, IRS Commissioner.

The IRS said that people with no tax liability may still qualify if they had $3,000 of qualifying income – such as Social Security or railroad retirement benefits – in 2007.

The recent mailings included a blank form for households to use, but people can also request a Form 1040A in the mail by calling 1-800-829-3676.

People must file by Oct. 15 in order to qualify for a stimulus check in 2008.
