UNION – The Grant Union volleyball team came up short in Union last week.
Grant Union fell in four games Friday, Aug. 29. Although the Prospectors won just one game, they kept the match close and lost by less than four points in the second and fourth games.
Union jumped out quick and won the first game 25-16. The Pros got on track in the second game, but lost a close one 25-23.
Grant Union switched places with Union in the third game, winning 25-23. However, the Bobcats clinched the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth game.
Senior LaShawnda Gill led the team on offense and defense. She had seven hitting kills and 15 digs.
Jacee Retherford earned six kills and Karina Hoffman had five. Retherford and Hoffman each had 11 digs. Sharon Houpt picked up 21 assists and four kills. Aspen Riggs had four kills, and Katelyn Page ended the day with two.
Grant Union coach Karen Broemling said early season mistakes hurt the team.
“We did not serve as well as we can and suffered from some costly net errors,” Broemling said. “We had some great offensive and defensive plays and stayed in all four games. We are looking forward toward more consistent play this week. We know what we need to work on in practice, and that is what preseason games are all about.”
The Pros will get plenty of chances to showcase improvements this week. They play Heppner and Lakeview at home Thursday, Sept. 4, at 4:30 p.m., and then hit the road to Pilot Rock Friday. Grant Union will wrap up the weekend at a tournament in Heppner Saturday.
The Grant Union junior varsity team swept Union, 25-15 and 25-18.
