Blue Basin hike

John Day Fossil Beds National Monument will offer a ranger-conducted, one-mile hike into the Blue Basin Fossil Beds at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6. The two-hour program features the geologic landscape and fossil history of the basin. Participants should meet at the Thomas Condon Visitor Center in the Sheep Rock Unit, nine miles west of Dayville. Fly-In Breakfast

JOHN DAY – Grant County Air Search will sponsor its annual Fly-In Breakfast, from 7-10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Grant County Airport. A breakfast, catered by Shcarol’s of Fox, will include pancakes, eggs, ham, orange juice, coffee and tea for $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Activities include a candy drop, “Sixchuter” powered parachute demonstration, United States Forest Service rappelling and retardant demonstrations, AirLife and other aircraft on display. DeWitt open house

PRAIRIE CITY – An open house for the newly-renovated DeWitt Museum will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6. Enjoy live music and refreshments while browsing the extensive collections of narrow gauge railroad artifacts and documents, the DeWitt family collection, a large assortment of rocks and minerals and artifacts from the Austin House. 10th annual shoot

PRAIRIE CITY – The 10th annual Shoot to Retrieve Competition will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 6 and 7, on Art Morgan Road, about two miles west of Prairie City. The competition is $60 to enter and there are only openings for 20 hunter and dog teams. The event is sponsored by the Oregon Bird Hunters Association who will provide maps and schedules for the hunters. More info: 820-4305 or 820-4608.

James Cant Ranch walk

John Day Fossil Beds National Monument will offer a ranger-conducted walk at the historic James Cant Ranch. The one-hour program features the ranch buildings of the historic district and the human history of the national monument and John Day Valley.

The free program starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7. The James Cant Ranch House is located in the Sheep Rock Unit, nine miles west of Dayville. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for the sun and field. More info: 987-2333.

Church open house

JOHN?DAY – The Historic Preservation Foundation of Grant County invites the public to an open house of the Historic Church in John Day from noon to 4 p.m Sunday, Sept. 7. The church is located at 261 W. Main Street. The church, built in the late 1890s is on the United States National Register of Historic Places.

Youth co-ed volleyball

JOHN DAY – Signups for youth co-ed volleyball for Grades 3-6 will be held from 5-6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 8, at the John Day/Canyon City Park and Recreation Office on Seventh Street, near the skate park. Patriots Day

CANYON CITY – Driskill Memorial Chapel and the Oregon Honor Guard will hold a “Service of Remembrance 2001-2008,” starting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Canyon City Cemetery. Youth pheasant hunt

PRAIRIE CITY – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is hosting a youth pheasant hunt starting at 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13 and 14, at the Prairie Wood Products office in Prairie City.
