Get outdoors at the Fossil Beds

Here are a few activities coming up this weekend at the John Day Fossil Beds. All events take place in the Sheep Rock Unit of the national monument, nine miles west of Dayville. For more information, call (541) 987-2333.
Star-gazingThe John Day Fossil Beds will offer a telescopic tour of the stars and planets from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Thomas Condon Visitor Center. Bring binoculars and dress for evening weather.
Ranch walk John Day Fossil Beds will hold a ranger-conducted walk at the historic James Cant Ranch. The one-hour program will feature the ranch buildings of the historic district and the human history of the national monument and the John Day Valley. The free program starts at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the James Cant Ranch house. Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for the sun and field.
Blue Basin hikeThe John Day Fossil Beds will offer a ranger-conducted one-mile hike into the Blue Basin fossil beds starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21. The two-hour hike will feature the geologic landscape and fossil history of the basin. Participants should meet at the Thomas Condon Visitor Center. Bring good hiking shoes, a water bottle and dress for the weather.
